Good architecture rarely arrives from one person. Behind every set of plans and construction documents is a team translating design intent into precise, buildable detail. I want to recognize two members of ours — Adal Avila and David Kim — who do exactly that work with genuine care and accuracy. They read the goals of a project quickly, execute with integrity, and make the whole process run better. If you are in the early stages of thinking about a small residential development — cottages, a pocket neighborhood, or something similar — we have a free Project Planning Pack that can be a useful starting point. Just send us a message and we will get it to you.

I finally walked Poundbury last week, King Charles's town in Dorset, thirty years in the making. Leon Krier masterplanned it, and Ben Pentreath has been one of its lead architects for over two decades, beginning with a student competition win to design the first phase of this very square. I started where the town started: Pummery Square, Phase 1.

Let me address the standard modernist critique first, that Poundbury is fake and toylike. It is unfounded. The design is mature in its complexity and harmonious in human scale and proportion. The materials are truly authentic: natural stone and brick masonry, hewn timber, clay tile roofs, crafted detail with meaning yet reserved ornamentation. There is a timeless quality here, a cultural connection to the heritage of Great Britain with references to vernacular and Georgian antecedents. Those who say it is not of its time must have a very short memory.

At the center of the square is John Simpson's Brownsword Hall. An open market hall below, a timber-trussed meeting room above. The hall is used by many community groups for meetings and exhibitions, and the open-air market beneath it hosts monthly local markets and festivals.

One thing that stayed with me from the Notre Dame design reviews had nothing to do with the quality of the drawings. Several students had navigated genuinely difficult personal circumstances during their year in Rome. They showed up, presented professionally, and received critique with openness and maturity. That kind of integrity is not something you learn in a drafting studio. It follows a person through their work. When I think about the architects I want on a team, I look for exactly that — someone who will show up when it is hard. Technical skill develops with time. That character is already formed.

Here's a little more on Lake Catherine. This really is a special place, if you haven't been out to see it, you need to.

Today we are in Groveland, exploring a new development that I am in the early stages of working on. Once this is complete, it's going to be a great place for the people of Groveland to gather and have events.

Here is some insight to a project we are currently working on in Clermont, just a little ways from the downtown area. This is very exciting to watch come to life.

When I evaluate architectural work — whether it is a student project or a professional proposal — one thing tends to separate the best from the rest: the ability to draw by hand. Not as an art form, but as a way of thinking through a design. Drawing forces decisions. Every line is a judgment about proportion, scale, and how spaces relate to one another. Designers who have never learned to draw carefully often struggle to evaluate those things with any real depth. In an era where most architects work digitally from the start, the hand-drawn sketch remains one of the most honest indicators of how well someone actually understands what they are designing.

Earlier this year, I served as a jury member for the final design review of the University of Notre Dame's Rome Studies Program. Over 50 third-year students presented their culminating work — a classical villa and spa resort in the Lazio countryside, drawn entirely by hand. Plans, elevations, sections, watercolor perspectives. What I saw genuinely encouraged me about the future of this profession. These students are not just well-trained. They are learning to see architecture the way it has always needed to be understood — through careful observation, deliberate craft, and serious engagement with what the great built traditions have to teach us.
