šŸ Behind the Scenes šŸ

Today was a special day for our herd!
After two weeks recovering from ankle surgery, our head shepherdess, Tamra Elliott, was able to join us for goat pickup. Watching the goats do a double take when they spotted Tamra in the crowd sitting along the run was priceless. They got to spend more time together back at the barn.

One of the things we love most about this work is the bond between our shepherds and the herd. Our Sheperdees Caitlin Savage has been doing an amazing job leading the goats during Tamra's recovery.

We're thankful for our incredible team, whose hard work has kept everything running smoothly and ensured our goats and projects continue to receive the same care and attention every day.

Our Bucklings Bo and Phoenix are protesting the Big Red Buffet Destroyer after it mowed down their all-you-can-eat salad bar.

Bo and Phoenix usually have the run of the farm on their Nofence USA invisible fence collars but today their protest earned themselves a boundary line in the invisible pasture so we can mow safely.

Today our two little Finn lambs, Atlas and Neso, had their very first shearings!

The person doing the shearing is called a worker, and the worker we hired, Lam Chop, is well known for his gentle handling of sheep. We were so impressed with how calmly and confidently he worked with the boys.

Because we've handled Atlas and Neso regularly since they were young, they weren't too concerned about being rolled and positioned during the process. Still, I can only imagine what it must feel like to have an entire year's worth of wool suddenly lifted away!
Lam Chop did great removed their fleeces in beautiful, continuous cuts, leaving us with two lovely fleece harvests. Nesso and Atlas target graze in thick dense areas with our goats so their wool is often referred to as "Wild Wool" because it grew while the lambs grazed through natural areas that tugged and brushed through some of it at varied times of growth. As a result, the fleece contains little reminders of their adventures through the vegetation, adding all kinds of textures and character that will reveal themselves during processing.
Atlas and Neso are looking a little sleeker tonight and, we imagine, feeling much lighter too.

Talk about a busy week! šŸ The herd showed up with just one job on the schedule in this neighborhood, but word got around fast. We ended up taking the goats on a tour through the whole neighborhood to clear extra yards before we packed up!

We got a call for a yard with native plantings that needed a quick turn around or else their insurance would cut them claiming the plants were a fire risk! We have been hearing this from insurance companies more and more.

We looked over the property and decided the front was not ideal for the goats but we could take on the side and the back.
Sustainable Landscape Solutions came to the rescue and tackled the front and the Iowa City Animal Shelter quickly processed and approved the permit to get the goats in.
Sweet Pea, Spot and Rue were plenty to get the project taken care of and objects exposed to allow a yard and garden reset and safe use of mechanical aids like a lawn mower in places desired. The plants can be selectively saved as they regrow and sorted into garden spaces the insurance company approves of since herbicide was not used.
Caitlin will followup with this homeowner to assist with the rest of the project.
