We got a call for a yard with native plantings that needed a quick turn around or else their insurance would cut them claiming the plants were a fire risk! We have been hearing this from insurance companies more and more.

We looked over the property and decided the front was not ideal for the goats but we could take on the side and the back.
Sustainable Landscape Solutions came to the rescue and tackled the front and the Iowa City Animal Shelter quickly processed and approved the permit to get the goats in.
Sweet Pea, Spot and Rue were plenty to get the project taken care of and objects exposed to allow a yard and garden reset and safe use of mechanical aids like a lawn mower in places desired. The plants can be selectively saved as they regrow and sorted into garden spaces the insurance company approves of since herbicide was not used.
Caitlin will followup with this homeowner to assist with the rest of the project.

Did you know Iowa City allows Targeted Goat Grazing as a form of management!
The whole neighborhood was out to welcome our goats to this backyard this week. Spot, Rue and Sweetpea are loving all the attention and the plants. Yum!

Yesterday, while with the goat herd, a brief rain shower rolled through, bringing an end to the heat. I waited it out in the truck, but when I looked back, a gorgeous rainbow appeared above the herd. They stood in wonder, trying so hard to reach it; I imagine they thought it would taste like Skittles ! This will surely be one of my top memories of being their shepherdess.

What a delightful surprise we encountered yesterday while spending time with our lovely herd. One of our cherished suscription herd goats held a precious secret, unbeknownst to us at the time we purchased her.

This little bundle of joy is loud and endearingly shy. As mother attempted to coax him into harmony with the herd, he would dart back to the wood pile. In a heartwarming display, the herd collectively decided to shift their nightly resting spot and form a safety circle around the devoted mother and her young one.

The mother and buckling is part of our suscription herd program doing targeted invasive species grazing on a property all graze season. The box on her neck is a Nofence USA collar and the herd is completely fenceless.

We knew the herd had been exposed to a buck as the herd ran with one before we got them and the chance of young was okayed by property owner enrolled in program. We were fooled though as there was not any of the signs we normally would see so it was a great suprise. We arrived just as she was cleaning him up and she was happy to allow us to see her new addition while she took a moment for herself. It was especially fun to welcome this addition with the property owner. Proud mamma. As we have the rest of this does herd as well at the site we are now on baby watch with the rest of the does.

Moment of panic today! Levi's collar sent out a inactivity alert meaning there has been severel hours with no movement.

Since this event he has also been sending us reduced activity alerts (pictured) and we figured out it is related to the pasture move and new abundance of grazing material. He doesnt have to do much to find browse compared to his last pasture which took more movement to get a full meal after having been grazing it for a week and less leaves per shrub.

The goats were sure excited to see this yummy play ground!
Its a complicated job for them with lots of mental stimulation.

The boxes on their necks is a Nofence USA invisible fencing.

🐝🐝Our expertise extends beyond targeted goat grazing. As ecologists, we initiate our projects by comprehensively understanding the local ecology, leveraging its benefits to achieve our objectives.

Given the significance of pollinators in our ecosystem, we prioritize staying current with the latest research and initiatives.

Recently, we attended an update on Rusty Patch Bumble Bee research and monitoring.

For landowners interested in identifying this species on their property and learning how to support pollinator ecology, our services are available.
