Do you want better functioning windows, but aren’t ready to to invest in all new windows, consider the following:
Lubricating house windows is a quick fix for sticky, stiff, or squeaky frames. Always use a silicone-based lubricant or dry PTFE spray. Avoid petroleum-based products (like standard WD-40), which attract dirt and turn into a sticky mess.
• 1. Clean the Tracks
Before applying any lubricant, remove dust and debris. Vacuum the tracks, then wipe them down with a cloth damp with a mixture of hot water and vinegar (or mild baby shampoo). Dry the area completely with a towel.
• 2. Apply the Lubricant
For targeted application that won’t overspray onto the glass or paint, spray the silicone lubricant directly onto a paper towel or rag.
Sliding/Double-Hung Windows: Wipe the paper towel evenly along the inside and outside tracks. If your window tilts inward, lightly wipe down the pivot blocks and balance rods on the sides of the sash.
Wooden Tracks: Instead of spray, use common candle wax or a dry bar of soap to rub along the wooden channels.
Casement Windows: Lightly apply a small amount of lithium high-pressure grease to the mechanical gears and operator joints.
• 3. Test and Distribute
Open and close the window fully several times to help spread the lubricant evenly across all contact points. Wipe away any excess drips with a clean, dry cloth.
