The future guests of this Ely barn will get something you can’t order from a catalog: the character that comes with a building that already has a story.

We’re helping turn part of the barn into an Airbnb, and these photos give a little glimpse of what’s taking shape. New framing is defining the space, while some of the old barnwood will bring warmth, texture, and a connection to its past into the finished interior.

Picture a weekend away with those details around you—the kind of place where the building itself is part of the experience.

We’re working alongside the owners on this project. They bring a clear vision and some impressive hands-on skills, and we’ve enjoyed combining their efforts with our team’s craftsmanship.

There’s still work ahead before it’s ready for guests, but it’s rewarding to see a new use taking shape within these old walls.

More to share as it comes together.

Imagine coming home on one of those Iowa winter days when the cold seems to follow you inside.

Now imagine having this waiting down the hall: a steam shower, a built-in bench, and a few quiet minutes to warm up and unwind.

We can see why the homeowners are looking forward to this one.

This is our first steam shower project, and our team is pretty proud of how the tile work came together. The warm wall tile continues across the bench and ceiling, while the patterned mosaic floor adds a little personality underfoot.

There’s a lot to appreciate in the overall look, but we especially like the details—the tile layout, the finished edges, and the way each surface meets the next.

We’re still waiting on the final plumbing fixtures and glass door installation before this space is ready to enjoy. But we couldn’t resist sharing a peek at the progress.

A little retreat at home. And eventually, a very good reason to welcome a cold day.

The rain had stopped months earlier. This deck was still holding onto it.

If you remember our earlier video, water literally poured out of the old decking as we took it apart. That water had been stored inside the decking for months—a memorable discovery, and a pretty clear sign that this space was overdue for a fresh start.

Here’s its next chapter.

Our team reframed the deck, installed TimberTech Advanced PVC decking, and added new railings. We also replaced the floor inside the existing sunroom, giving the indoor and outdoor spaces a matching finish.

The biggest change for the homeowners goes beyond the photos: the waterlogged decking is gone, and they now have moisture-resistant PVC decking that doesn’t need the regular staining of a wood deck.

More time for meals in the sunroom, grilling outside, and enjoying the backyard. Less time maintaining the surface beneath their feet.

The sunroom and pergola were already here. Our part was rebuilding the deck, replacing the rails, and giving the sunroom floor an upgrade of its own.

Grateful to these homeowners for trusting our team with the comeback.

Thank you to Suburban Lumber Company for supplying the decking and to Yoder's Custom Vinyl for supplying the handrails.

Imagine having this view—and being comfortable enough to enjoy it in every season. 🌿

We completely remade this sunroom into a four-seasons room. New windows put the outdoors front and center, while tile floors, a paneled ceiling, a new fan, and a sage green accent wall make it a welcoming place to settle in. A mini-split provides heating and cooling when Iowa’s weather changes its mind.

The husband told us one of their hopes was to give Mom a quiet space to escape to. There’s been one small plot twist: their teenagers have been enjoying it even more often than she has. 😄

We’ll take that as a good sign. Take a look through the final photos and tell us—which seat would you claim?

Quick shoutout to Squaw Creek Millwork for providing windows and Adams Tile & Stone for supplying the tile for us, Menefee for the drywall work and to Suburban Lumber Company for the framing and deck material, and Vetter-Parks Lumber for the ceiling and accent wall material.

Crafted actually did begin as the work of one person.

For the first few years, Dane handled nearly every part of the business and building process himself. As the company grew, we didn’t want to add people simply for the sake of completing more projects. We wanted to grow intentionally and bring in carpenters we could trust—with the work, with our clients’ homes and with the reputation we were building.

Today, Dane may not personally build every part of every project. Our carpenters bring their own experience, problem-solving ability and craftsmanship to the jobsite, and they are trusted to make good decisions and take ownership of their work.

At the same time, being a small team allows us to stay closely connected. When an unexpected condition is uncovered or an important detail deserves another perspective, our carpenters run it by Dane. That collaboration helps ensure the approach and level of care remain consistent, regardless of who is performing a particular part of the work.

Behind the scenes, other members of our team also help us strengthen our communication, marketing and processes so the client experience receives the same thoughtful attention as the construction itself.

Crafted has grown beyond one person—but we’ve grown slowly and intentionally. The goal isn’t for one person to do everything. It’s to build a trustworthy, connected team that shares responsibility for doing the work well.

BUILT TO LAST: Tile isn’t waterproof.

See all that red? That’s the part of this shower that’s actually doing the waterproofing.

A beautifully tiled shower can look perfect from the outside.

But the tile isn't actually the part protecting your house from water.

Tile and grout make up the finished surface. Behind them should be a carefully installed waterproofing system that directs water where it belongs and keeps it away from the framing, subfloor, and other parts of the house that really don't like being wet.

That means the details you can't see when the bathroom is finished—waterproofing membranes, properly treated seams, corners, niches, penetrations, and transitions—can be every bit as important as the tile you picked out.

We've opened up showers before where the finished product looked reasonably good but the assembly underneath had failed. By the time the problem became visible, water had already had plenty of time to do damage.

It's one of the reasons we're so interested in what goes behind the finish.

Good construction shouldn't just look good on the day we leave.

It should still be doing its job years from now.

Fine Homebuilding has an excellent article called Three Ways to Waterproof Tile Showers that goes much deeper into the subject. It's one of the resources we use to continue learning and refining how we approach this kind of work.

By this point in the summer, the landscaping is lush, the flowers are full, and the yard is finally starting to feel like it’s running on autopilot.

It’s also one of the best times of year to slow down and enjoy the home and outdoor spaces you’ve spent the season caring for.

For these homeowners, that outdoor space needed an upgrade. The original wood decking and railings were weathered, and they were tired of the ongoing cycle of painting, staining, and watching the finish wear down again.

We removed the old decking and railings, made a few modifications to the existing framing, and reused the structure that was still in good condition. The deck was then rebuilt with composite boards and a sleek black railing.

The result is a lower-maintenance outdoor space that feels clean, finished, and cohesive with the home’s dark charcoal-gray exterior.

Less time maintaining the deck. More time sitting outside, taking in the landscaping, and enjoying this part of summer at home.

The list of things to maintain around a home never seems to get shorter.

These homeowners already had a screened-in porch they enjoyed, but the original screen system was built with painted wood. Like many exterior wood surfaces, it needed ongoing attention as it weathered—cleaning, repainting, repairing, and eventually replacing deteriorated pieces.

We were brought in to install new screens and replace the painted wood components with a powder-coated aluminum system.

The porch will still have the same purpose and open-air feel, but it should be much easier for the homeowners to care for. Instead of adding another exterior surface to the scraping-and-painting list, maintenance should mostly consist of occasional cleaning.

Homeownership comes with enough projects that demand your weekends. Whenever possible, we like helping homeowners choose materials that will hold up well without continually asking for more time and attention.

The best upgrade is sometimes the one that lets you simply enjoy your home.

PS. Thanks to Suburban Lumber Company for supplying and to Digger Specialties for creating the Westbury Screenrail system—this is a game-changer for homeowners!

Once the finishes came out, the real work could begin.

Once we understood what had failed, we could begin rebuilding the space for better long-term performance.

We removed the existing tile throughout the connected laundry room, walk-in closet, and primary bathroom so we could address the problems below—not simply cover them with another new finish.

In the bathroom, that meant opening up the shower area, removing damaged materials, repairing the water-affected subfloor and surrounding areas, and correcting the conditions that had allowed the shower to leak.

From there, we could begin rebuilding the space on a better foundation.

The new tile is now being installed through all three connected rooms, giving the homeowners the continuous surface they originally wanted. This time, the preparation, materials, and installation are being approached with long-term performance in mind.

There is still more to come, including the completed shower, new countertops, and upgraded glass. For now, it is encouraging to see these rooms moving beyond demolition and beginning to feel like a home again.

Because the goal was never simply to make the space look new for a second time. It was to make sure it functions and holds up the way a remodeled space should.
