⚠️ Protect Yourself from Locksmith Scams⚠️
Over the past several months, we've heard from an increasing number of customers who were searching for a local locksmith—or even trying to find John's Lock & Key—only to discover they had unknowingly hired a scam operation posing as a local locksmith.
As a company that's proudly served Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Eastern Iowa since 1964, we feel a responsibility to help educate our community.
Common Red Flags
🔑 An unbelievably low price is quoted over the phone.
🔑 Upon arrival they claim your lock "can't be picked" or is "high security" and immediately recommend drilling and replacing it. While drilling is sometimes necessary, it should always be the last resort—not the first.
🔑 The final bill suddenly jumps from the original quote to hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars.
🔑 You're pressured to pay with Cash App, Zelle, or another peer-to-peer payment app because those payments generally can't be disputed the way credit card charges often can.
Protect Yourself
✅ Get the total price before any work begins.
✅ If the price changes dramatically after the technician arrives, don't be afraid to stop the job before any work begins.
✅ Ask questions before approving any drilling or lock replacement. A reputable locksmith should be able to explain why it's necessary after they have exhausted every other non-destructive method.
✅ Ask for the technician's name before they arrive. If they can't tell you who's coming to your home or business, that's a red flag.
✅ Pay with a credit card whenever possible. If you later discover you've been the victim of a scam or bait-and-switch, you may be able to dispute the charges with your credit card company.
Whether you choose John's Lock & Key or another reputable locksmith, our hope is simply that you stay informed and protect yourself.
Thank You!!
