Let’s talk flooring thickness… because those numbers actually mean something.
You’ll usually see flooring in 2.5mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 6.5mm, or 8mm.
Here’s what that means in real life:
2.5mm
This is the budget option you’ll often find at big box stores.
If you’re flipping a house, replacing a floor before selling, or just need the cheapest option possible, it can work.
If it’s your forever home? I’d keep looking.
4.5mm
A great entry-level floor.
Perfect if you’re updating a bedroom, rental, or you’re on a tighter budget but still want something that feels like quality flooring.
5mm
This is where you start getting a little more “substance.”
It feels a little sturdier under your feet and is a great fit for the average family home.
6.5mm
This is my sweet spot.
If someone says, “I have kids, a dog, and I don’t want to think about my floors again for a long time,” this is usually where I start.
It has a more solid feel, helps hide small imperfections in your subfloor, and just feels more premium.
8mm
If you’ve ever walked into a house and immediately thought, “These floors feel expensive,” there’s a good chance they were in this range.
It’s quieter, feels more substantial, and is what I’d recommend if you’re doing your dream home or just want that higher-end feel.
One important thing…
Thickness doesn’t automatically mean it’s more durable.
Think of thickness as comfort and feel.
Think of the wear layer as what determines how well it stands up to scratches, pets, kids, and everyday life.
You want to look at both, not just whichever number is bigger.
The best flooring isn’t always the thickest.
It’s the one that fits your house, your budget, and your life.
And yes… flooring companies could make this a whole lot less confusing. 😅
