JET Filter System LLC Vinyl Sheet Piling, Steel Sheet Piling and Bridge Abutments weep hole filter. Maintainable weep hole units

Manageable Weep Hole Component

Retaining walls, bridge abutments, sheet piling and seawalls are failing daily in all parts of the world due to the lack of proper erosion control. The JET FILTER prevents wall failure/movement by relieving water pressure and allowing drainage while saving time & money on extensive repairs. The JET FILTER relieves the hydrostatic pressures created by rain water as w

ell as tidal surges trapped behind erosion control structures such as:

• Seawalls
• Bulkheads
• Retaining Walls
• Sheet Piling
• Bridge Abutments

The purpose of the weep holes is to relieve the hydrostatic water pressure that inevitably will be behind the wall. These weep holes should also be maintained periodically to insure that they do not become clogged. Panel seams which have opened up or toe failure of the wall can be an indicator of unrelieved pressure due to clogged or insufficient weep holes. If the tiebacks deteriorate sufficiently and water pressure builds up behind the seawall, either from heavy rain or a storm surge, the cap can crack through and the wall collapse outward. The media equipped in the JET Filter System is the highly rated Mirafi® Filter-weave FW 300 series. This media maintains long-term flow rates in high gradient and dynamic conditions. With its removable inner cartridge, the filter can be changed and cleaned if needed, from the front side of the earth retaining structure without dredging from behind to replace the erosion control fabric.

The University of Missouri put it plainly in their DOT-funded research: poor drainage is by far the most common cause of poor performance for earth retention systems.

That finding holds across every structure type we work with. Retaining walls, bridge abutments, seawalls, box culverts, flood channels. The failure mechanism is always the same. Water with nowhere to go.

We mapped out where hydrostatic pressure causes the most damage and why, with documented applications across all seven structure types.

Specifying weep hole filters on a federally funded project is not as straightforward as it looks. DOT approval and Buy America compliance are two separate requirements, and written documentation is often required for both. A product appearing to be domestic is not the same as being certified.

That's why we put together this practical guide for engineers and project managers. Make sure your next submittal package goes out without hiccups.

Hydrostatic pressure is one of the leading causes of retaining wall failure, and one of the most preventable. The warning signs show up well before a wall reaches the point of no return.

Traditional weep holes clog quickly from sediment buildup. Once clogged, water flow drops to near zero but the wall continues to saturate and pressure continues to build. What comes next shows up as efflorescence, horizontal cracking, or in the worst cases, active structural displacement.

We put together a field guide covering all five warning signs and what each one means structurally. If you work on or around retaining walls, it is worth a read before the next heavy rainfall event.

When a drainage systems fail, they fail expensively.

Retaining wall repairs run $250 to $700 per square foot, bridge abutments can reach $1,200+, and traditional weep holes can't even be repaired in place once they go.

The 100-year total cost of ownership tells the real story. JET Filter™ runs about $25K in periodic maintenance over a century. Traditional weep holes compound to $500K and beyond.

The challenge of the Red Rocks Amphitheatre Drainage Project involved natural rock formations and sloped landscapes where rainwater runoff frequently traveled beneath the pathways, and erosion risks threatened the stability landscaped areas.

Case Study:

Red Rocks Amphitheatre upgraded rock face wall drainage using JET Filters and diverters to control runoff, reduce erosion, and protect pathways.
