It’s been a while since we’ve posted some recent work. Here is a house project we’ve been working on in Dubuque. It’s an ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) home that will take very little energy to heat and cool. More updates to come!

With the heat of summer back upon us, here are some tips for your home.

1. Remember to shade your largest windows, especially ones that face East and West to keep the sun from heating your home.

2. Remember that fans do not cool the air. They pull the heat off of you and make you feel cooler. Fans running when no one is around does nothing to cool the house, they just use electricity. You can use fans to help circulate the air conditioning by setting them by registers or window air conditioners.

3. The heat of summer is a prime time to run the dehumidifier in your basement, especially if you have bare concrete (uninsulated) walls. The warm humid air will move to colder areas of the house such as the bare concrete walls and condense, making the basement more damp in the heat and humidity of summer. You will be able to feel a difference just by running the dehumidifier for several hours.

4. If you do not have air conditioning, remember especially to close windows and blinds during the day to hold out the heat. When the sun has gone down, open windows and pull in the cool night air with fans set in or near the windows. Open windows on both sides of the house to allow for cross ventilation.

Call us with any questions about heat and humidity issues. We specialize in energy efficiency and building science. We know how it works and can help you stay as comfortable as possible.
