Don’t let planting in the shade bum you out, there are some fantastic evergreen options available that will give you year round interest. Yes the shade-loving plant babies are a bit more obscure than their full sun counterparts but they can be just as beautiful.

For shade planting, focus on a variety of textures and shades of green, from deep green to lime. Look for glossy or variegated leaves to reflect light and incorporate varied heights. Plant in groups and repeat your plants for interest and continuity.

I’m in zone 7B, and if you have questions about plants featured here or your planting zone, please comment below and I’ll do my best to answer.

Happy planting my friends! Follow over at for daily planting content.

The right pots and plants turn a house into a well-curated home, so warm and inviting... as God intended all southern front porches to be.

In addition to sun exposure, I always consider a home’s aesthetic and the homeowners preferences when selecting plants. We choose some red and white flowers to accent these black pots, in true Wolfpack fashion.

Yea I’m filthy and yes this is a great idea! It makes planting a breeze, do the heavy digging once and you’re ready for several seasons of planting those cute little annual flowers.

Utilities can be the wild card of planting- it’s always best to be safe and call 811 to have your yard located and marked before you plant any shrubs or trees. It is free and this one simple step can save you from something as simple as cutting your internet to something as serious as hitting natural gas or bursting a water main.

We called 811 but my hubs also sells, trains on, and uses the very same locating equipment, so that green thing he’s swinging around is an added layer of protection for us as we are planting in the areas we know there are utilities.

The house we are loving back to life happens to have a very high water table and when that water table is high, it forces roots and utilities to be shallow. Lots of roots, plus the crazy lack of rain right now, makes digging a nightmare. So augers are the way to go - just make sure you call 811 first.

You can rent augers from rental yards and big box stores. You can rent them as attachments for a skid steer like we have (you can rent those as well) or you can rent a handheld version.

Happy planting!!

Anyone who has even had a boxwood is familiar with what happens when a branch breaks off or dies, it leaves a huge gaping hole of brown in the green “veneer.”

Distyliums were such a cool find for me, I love that the branches are drenched in leaves. I even transplanted the first three I bought after two seasons and they didn’t skip a beat. I love them for under windows and porches or on slopes that show off their cool spread. They offer foundational improvement without blocking sight lines to your home - which is so important!!

Key facts:
Evergreen, slow growing, berries out in late winter/early spring, deer and rabbit resistant, full to part sun, drought-tolerant,
low-maintenance

If you try them out, let me know what you think. And follow along as I introduce you to more of my favorite plants that make your landscape look intentional.

Azalea lovers, have I hit a nerve? Someone needed to say it and landscapers - do better.

But you’re not alone, if you need help, i gotchu. I do in-person landscape consults and design for just 150. You get plant recommendations based upon your wants and needs, along with detailed drawings and tips and tricks.

Please y’all, let’s stop with the cookie cutter nonsense! Just say no to boxwoods.

Here’s a sneak peek as to what’s going on at the house - it’s so exciting to finally be closing up walls! The guys at IQP Drywall and Paint are killing it AND making reels along the way, if you need drywall or painting done - I highly recommend you give Jonathan a call!

Veradek pots, my fresh organic, custom soil blend, Kimberly Queen ferns, “Euphoric White” euphorbia, sweet potato vines, a sprinkle of organic fertilizer and a healthy drink of water later…these pots are poshed!!

Kimberly Queen ferns can tolerate way more sun than most. Plant them early in the Spring and they’ll do even better in the summer heat and sun! When you water them, water them deep.

Pro tip: just because water is coming out of the bottom of your pot does not mean they are thoroughly watered. Turn down your hose pressure and give them a loooong drink, think 3-5 minutes per pot, every 2-3 days.

Here we go! Posh Pots are going down April 6-17th at your home! I have room for about 10-20 clients. New clients, please see the image below with how to reserve your spot. If you have reached out already, i’ll be following up with you this week to finalize your reservation.

This year I’ve introduced a referral program, so your friend that loved your pots last summer - can get some of her own this Spring with a nice discount for you both.

I do not have pots/planters available this year but I highly recommend Veradek planters. They’re substantial, durable and beautiful. The scale of your pots, especially around your front door, are vitally important!! And you can get them off Amazon.

Please reach out with questions - i’m here to help!

(Mailbox makeovers and landscape consults are still available and will resume after April 17th.)
