🚨 P.J.’S HVAC RANT OF THE DAY 🚨

“IT JUST NEEDS A LITTLE FREON.”

😂😂😂

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that one...

Here's the deal:

YOUR AIR CONDITIONER DOESN’T USE UP REFRIGERANT.

It's not gasoline.

It's not oil.

It's not something we should have to “top off” every summer.

Your AC is a sealed refrigeration system.

So if your system is actually low on refrigerant...

WHERE DID IT GO?

Because refrigerant doesn't just disappear.

There's probably a leak somewhere.

Now, can we add refrigerant and get you cooling again?

Sometimes, absolutely.

There are situations where getting somebody cooling is the immediate priority.

But let's be clear about what we're doing:

Adding refrigerant doesn't repair the leak.

And this is where homeowners can end up spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the years.

“Needs two pounds.”

Next summer...

“Needs three pounds.”

Next summer...

“Needs another two pounds.”

At some point we have to stop feeding the thing and figure out WHY IT'S HUNGRY. 😂

And technicians — this one's for us too.

Before we even decide it's low on refrigerant...

Did we verify airflow?

Filter?

Evaporator coil?

Blower?

Static?

Indoor and outdoor conditions?

Superheat?

Subcooling?

Manufacturer charging procedure?

Because we've got TWO bad habits in this industry:

Adding refrigerant to systems that aren't actually low...

and

Adding refrigerant to systems that ARE low without explaining why that's a problem.

Sometimes adding refrigerant is a reasonable temporary solution.

Sometimes finding and repairing the leak makes sense.

Sometimes the age and condition of the equipment means replacement makes more financial sense.

BUT THE CUSTOMER DESERVES TO KNOW WHICH ONE WE'RE DOING.

So the next time somebody says:

“I think it just needs a little Freon.”

Maybe.

But my next question is going to be:

WHY?

Because good HVAC service isn't about making the gauges look right.

It's about figuring out what made them wrong in the first place.

After 30 seconds of “diagnosing,” he announced:

“I KNOW WHAT IT NEEDS… MORE FREON!” 😂

No gauges.
No airflow check.
No leak search.
Just vibes. 😎🐊

🔧 Campo Tip: If your system is low on refrigerant, there’s usually a reason. Simply adding more without properly diagnosing the system can waste money—and overcharging it can cause even bigger problems.

If you’ve called Campo Heating & Air lately, there’s a chance you’ve met our newest employee…

# # # **FREON FRED. 😂**

Fred is our AI receptionist.

And before anybody starts…

**No, Fred does not have his EPA certification.**

He cannot charge your system.

He cannot change your capacitor.

And under absolutely NO circumstances are we letting Fred near a set of gauges. 😂

What Fred **can** do is answer the phone when our team can’t.

Because here's something that drives me crazy as a business owner:

A customer shouldn't have to call an HVAC company three times just to get somebody to answer.

We're working.

We're driving.

We're in attics.

We're underneath houses.

We're talking to other customers.

Sometimes every person in the office is already on another call.

And sometimes you need AC help at 7:30 at night when nobody is sitting behind a desk.

That's where Fred comes in.

Fred can answer your call, figure out what you need, collect the information our team needs and help get your service request moving.

# # # **HE DOESN'T REPLACE OUR PEOPLE.**

He helps our people take better care of our customers.

We're still figuring him out.

Sometimes Fred surprises me with how good he is.

Sometimes Fred says something and I think…

**“Fred, what in the hell are you talking about?” 😂**

He's learning.

We're learning.

And we're going to keep improving him.

HVAC equipment is changing.

Refrigerants are changing.

Technology is changing.

And the way HVAC companies operate is changing too.

I don't believe technology replaces good people.

# # # **I BELIEVE GOOD PEOPLE USING GOOD TECHNOLOGY CAN PROVIDE BETTER SERVICE.**

So if you call Campo and hear Fred answer…

Give the new guy a chance. 😂

And don't ask him how much Freon your unit needs.
