The Carmine Pollinator Garden is still afloat even though over 5” of rain has fallen in 24 hrs. We’re watching the resilience of our native plants to withstand the extremes. Maybe we need a bridge!

Tomorrow night the sky over your street lights up. You'll be watching. So will every animal within earshot — and none of them know it's a holiday.

To a bird asleep on its roost, a firework isn't a celebration. It's a predator strike out of nowhere. Whole flocks flush off their perches into the dark, panicked, flying farther and higher than they ever would by choice, colliding with windows and walls, burning energy they can't spare. Some abandon their nests. This week is still fledgling season — the young are out of the nest and clumsy, and the noise doesn't care.

On the ground it's the same story. Deer, rabbits, and foxes bolt from the booms, sometimes straight into roads and fences. Wildlife rehabbers know the pattern so well they brace for it. The morning of July 5th brings a wave of stunned, injured, and orphaned animals through their doors.

You can still celebrate. A few small choices change what it costs.

Go to a big public show instead of setting off your own beside the tree line where things are nesting. If you do light your own, keep it well clear of woods, water, and dry grass — one ember is all a fire needs. And when it's over, walk the yard in the morning and pick up every casing and plastic cap. Animals mistake the debris for food and feed it to their young.

Enjoy the show. Just remember whose backyard it's echoing through.

“I grow plants for many reasons: to please my eye or to please my soul, to challenge the elements or to challenge my patience, for novelty or for nostalgia, but mostly for the joy in seeing them grow.” —David Hobson
