This fireplace is part of a kitchen addition, and a kitchen is where a fire gets the most use, since that’s where people end up anyway. The firebox is raised off the floor so the flames are visible to someone standing and cooking, not only someone sitting in front of it. The space underneath holds firewood, and the w**e column beside the stone is built into the cabinetry so it reads as furniture instead of an appliance. Stone is a lot of material to bring into a kitchen, so the detailing on everything around it stays simple.

This started as a small farmhouse. We added two additions, a new exterior facade, and a pool, and the hard part was making all of it read as one house. Additions tend to give themselves away through mismatched rooflines, siding that almost matches, or windows that ignore the originals. Redoing the entire exterior let us tie old and new together, and keeping the additions lower than the two-story original keeps that form dominant. The goal is for a first-time visitor to have no idea where the old house ends.
