A key lesson Architecture Principal Emmie Tyson has learned is that sustainability and student wellbeing can never be treated as separate conversations. Designing for higher education means designing for connection, belonging, and opportunity.

For Emmie, spaces should do more than support learning. They should integrate sustainability and student wellness through strategies like improved daylight and air quality that support concentration and reduce stress, as well as flexible, comfortable environments that enhance accessibility and support diverse student needs.

The Wake Technical Community College Education & Innovation Center, recognized as the 2024 Green Globes Project of the Year Runner-Up, reflects that philosophy through flexible learning environments, visible sustainability strategies, and student-centered spaces that encourage movement, interaction, and wellness.

When architecture is designed with people in mind, the building itself becomes part of the learning experience.
