We often get asked why we adjust mowing heights throughout the year. The reason is simple: it’s about keeping your lawn healthy, strong, and looking its best!
Why we raise the mower deck in summer:
*Taller grass shades the soil, reducing heat stress and slowing moisture loss.
*Promotes deeper roots, making your lawn more resilient to drought.
*Helps your lawn crowd out w**ds naturally.
Why we lower the mower deck in fall:
*It reduces the risk of snow mold by preventing long, dense grass that traps moisture.
*Helps even out the lawn before winter, reducing disease risk and encouraging uniform growth next spring.
*Fall mowing at slightly lower heights ensures nutrients from late-season fertilization are absorbed efficiently.
*Shorter grass prepares the lawn for overseeding, allowing seeds to make better contact with soil.
Even with the best fertilizer or w**d control, a lawn that isn’t mowed correctly will never look its best. Proper mowing is the foundation of a healthy, green yard.
Additional tips for a great lawn in Central PA:
Lawn Aeration:
*Recommended: Once per year, ideally in early fall (September to mid-October) when soil temperatures are still warm and grass is actively growing.
Why: Aeration relieves soil compaction, improves root growth, and enhances nutrient and water absorption.
Aeration + Overseeding:
*Recommended: Every 2–3 years, or more often if:
Your lawn has thinned out due to traffic, disease, or pests.
*You want to introduce new grass varieties for better disease or drought resistance.
Why: Overseeding thickens the lawn, crowds out w**ds, and repairs bare or weak spots. Doing this after aeration ensures better seed to soil contact, maximizing germination.
*Get a soil test to see what nutrients your lawn may be missing.
With the right mowing habits and a little extra care, your lawn can truly be the envy of the neighborhood!
