From blueprint to reality!

Every successful landscape begins with a master plan. Our designs bring all the elements together in a clear, detailed blueprint, helping clients visualize their future outdoor space and understand how each piece fits into the bigger picture.

One of the most rewarding parts of the process is watching that vision come to life. Thanks to some fantastic drone photography, you can now compare our original design with the finished landscape from above. We think this project is a great example of a plan brought to life!

It's already time to start thinking about getting your garden ready for winter. ❄ Want an easier fall cleanup? Leave the leaves in your garden beds! Clear them off the lawn but follow Mother Nature’s lead and let those leaves create a cozy winter blanket for your plants.

Leaf litter also provides shelter for pollinators and other beneficial insects to overwinter, giving them a safe place to hide until spring. Try it in your garden this fall...your plants (and the pollinators) will thank you!

Another thing to think about is protecting sensitive plants from deer browsing over the winter. We recommend using netting over shrubs such as hollies, hydrangea, rhododendron and even arborvitae. This protects your garden (and investment) from hungry deer over the long winter months. It's worth the time and the netting is hardly noticeable. Can you spot it in this garden?

The pollinators are loving these fall-blooming Asters! 🐝

While most of the garden is starting to wind down for the season, a few heavy-hitting perennials keep the buffet open for several more weeks. This is Smooth Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve ‘Bluebird’), a native perennial known for its vibrant blooms and hardy nature. And it’s not just the bees that benefit. After flowering, the plants produce seed heads that provide food for small birds like goldfinches, chickadees, and juncos, while adding a little winter interest to the garden.

Some other wonderful fall additions include Sedums, Goldenrod, Calamintha and Hardy Mums. As food becomes harder to find this time of year, these late-blooming plants are an especially welcome stop for pollinators. And just look at those bees go! 🐝

A detail from a recent install and an example of a softer way to plan a bluestone terrace. Tumbled bluestone with lawn joints creates a more relaxed and natural feel than a traditional hardscape installation. The irregular bluestone creates a beautiful transition between the stone wall and stairs. The lawn joints soften this transition and together, create a casual buffer zone between the hardscape and the rest of the yard. We love the result!

October is here and this garden is still popping with colorful blooms and fabulous foliage! When we design our gardens, we carefully plan out not only the bloom sequence of the flowering plants, but how the foliage plays into the composition.

In the foreground is Husker's Red Beard tongue (Penstemon digitalis), one of my favorite perennials! It's native and flowers in June. The bell shaped blooms are a favorite of hummingbirds and late spring pollinators. In the fall, the seed heads turn dark purple, providing interest all through the winter. And the fall color!?! What a stunning red!!

If you haven't tried this plant, I urge you get out to your local garden center this weekend and plant a few.

Often the best landscape designs don’t start with a blank slate, they work with what is already there. Existing boulders, reclaimed granite steps, and fieldstone found right on or near the property can become an important part of the design. Rather than removing these natural elements, we try to incorporate them into the design, creating walls, transitions, steps, and gathering spaces that feel as though they’ve always belonged there. The weathered stone adds texture and character, while the irregular forms soften the lines of the garden and blend naturally with the surrounding landscape.

And not to mention, these elements add the perfect backdrop for all your perennials, shrubs, and trees. Just look how beautifully and naturally this garden grew in! The result is a landscape that feels less constructed and more connected to its setting.

We are pleased to introduce Miss Phoebe, head of the Tuxedo Cat Management Team here at the office. 🐈‍⬛

Her main task is keeping the boys in line - and, of course, enforcing a strict dress code. You guessed it: black tie for all cats, all the time!

We have a pretty sharp-looking feline team here at AVLD, if I do say so myself! 🖤

This plant combination is a great reminder that foliage and texture can be just as important as flowers. The bright golden-yellow blooms of False Sunflower (Heliopsis 'Bleeding Hearts') pop beautifully against the blue-green foliage, while the fine, whispy texture of the Autumn Moor Grass (Sesleria autumnalis) adds another layer of movement and softness. Mixing bold flowers with airy grasses is an easy way to create a planting that feels natural and full of texture, without everything blooming all at once.

Beautiful perennial combo alert! Echinacea ‘Magnus’ (Coneflower) and Calamintha ‘White Cloud’ is a garden combination that we love.

The tall, bold blooms of Echinacea create a beautiful contrast with the airy, cloud-like growth of Calamintha. We especially love using Calamintha in front of taller perennials. It spills gently over garden edges and fills in beautifully between plants.
And talk about a pollinator magnet! Calamintha keeps blooming well into late summer and is always buzzing with bees and butterflies. Echinacea keeps going strong, too, providing seeds that birds can enjoy well into fall and winter.

A great combination for color, texture, movement, and wildlife, all in one planting.🌺

A fresh new install! What a dramatic difference for this lovely backyard.

The area beneath the deck was leveled and transformed into a beautiful bluestone terrace, creating a welcoming spot for grilling, gathering, and enjoying the backyard. Seat walls frame the terrace, adding built-in seating and a beautiful backdrop for the new perennial beds. Irregular bluestone placed in the lawn creates a relaxed path from the driveway into the yard.

And this is just the beginning! As the new perennials and shrubs fill in next spring, this garden will really come to life.
