We whooped a little when the brick façade was built, but we really danced a happy dance seeing friends and family coming and going for a swim at the Carbondale Aquatics Center during this hot, HOT summer. This season reminded us why it’s all worth it. Thank you, Carbondale.

In our “Passion Project” radical remodel, L+S principal Korber worked to ensure that architecture was a quiet backdrop for the homeowner’s personality to shine through in the interior design, focusing on restraint and subtlety of architectural moves. The trick of this project was bringing an aesthetic of minimalism to a quirky, DIY home. In its finished form and before and after images, it’s unrecognizable, and proof that reuse can be successful even when some would call the property a tear-down.

One of our recent undertakings, a radical remodel, became known as our “Passion Project” house due to the amount of heart and soul the team poured into salvaging this unique home. “When Land+Shelter offered to work on the project it was more than a working partnership and more like a community project,” says Chris erickson art , in the latest issue of Après magazine, written by Amiee White Beazley. “Land+Shelter took the time to understand the desires and needs. So much thought and consideration was given to the workflow and lifestyle requirements of myself as a working artist.” This artist studio and residence combination brings the best of mountain living into one simple live-work project. The design utilized an existing cut into the hillside overlooking Cattle Creek, with fantastic views of Mount Sopris and lots of glass and exterior deck spaces soak in the view of the mountains in the distance and meadows in the foreground below.

Design goals for Land+Shelter’s “Convergence House” leaned into handcrafted-maker-modern. Custom carpentry, including the stair guardrail, primary bedroom closet, all interior doors, floors, and cabinet door fronts are Douglas fir. L+S principal Andrea Korber wanted something in her home that was light but unexpected; a protective finish was added to the Douglas fir that arrests the UV darkening properties so it will always look freshly cut. That influenced tile selection as well, with natural clay or terra-cotta pinks complementing the wood. The exterior pallet includes white brick and rough sawn Douglas fir as well. Everything in this home is designed to age; exterior materials weather the sun, interior materials weather life in a growing a family. The living area of our Convergence House opens with a 12-foot bi-fold door and a four-panel slider pass-through window, which works well in Western Colorado, with mild shoulder seasons and often mild summer evenings. The point of the “V” is opened to make a face facing the street which takes the form of a welcoming glass porch. The project is a magnet for gatherings of extended family and friends that flow in and out of a space that breathes. This indoor-outdoor porosity occurs not just for entertaining but also in daily family and office life. Architects are invited to dip out for a fresh air meeting. The project achieves this well-used private courtyard idyll while also keeping one eye on the street. Kitchen users watch friends and family arriving home, or kids riding bikes in the cul-de-sac.

Our “Convergence House” is principal Andrea Korber's personal and professional dream. Conceived and created alongside her husband, who acted as the general contractor, this project was a family affair. The home is built on a pie-shaped lot with a narrow point facing a round cul-de-sac street. The two wings of the home bracket a backyard sanctuary with a ditch running through it. Each wing houses the family home and the Land+Shelter architecture studio, respectively, and they each have a distinct identity from one another. Both were also intended to share access to a private yard space. This site plan diagram shows how the site is a gradation from most architectural at the point, to most natural at the ditch, getting more organic as you move away from the convergence point of the V.

Architect Taylor Higgins helped bring the Little Red Schoolhouse expansion project to life. Her firm designed the 5,650-square-foot building addition, which broke ground on June 17.
