The Hawthorne family lost their matriarch on Wednesday, 2/11. Ann was one of a kind and a true force. She was always so proud of the success of Hawthorne Davis and that her son was the owner.

She will be greatly missed and forever loved by her many friends and large family, including grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Today we lost a good friend and an amazing artist. Brian DeMusz finally lost his corageous battle with cancer. He has been painting our signs and trucks since we started the business well over 30 years ago.

Brian was a good man who was always there when you needed him. I would call him and say I needed a house number or plaque painted for one of the new homes or old Victorian homes we were renovating, and he would drop everything to get it done.

George and I gave Brian one of the bays in our shop so he could have plenty of space to work on lettering trucks or creating signs for the various businesses around town. We loved having him there and discussing our views with him on politics and the world. We would come in every morning and see the new signs or carvings he was working on and just be amazed. To say Brian had talent is an understatement!

If you drive around Cape May, Brian is responsible for 90% of the signage on the stores, hotels, bed and breakfast establishments, and private homes. One morning we came in and there was a large Hawthorne Davis sign that Brian had carved for the front of the shop. I’m not sure how he hid it from us, but it was a great surprise.

At least once a month, no matter where I was, I would get compliments on my truck lettering. I loved telling people that it was Brian, and that it was hand painted. There aren’t many guys around anymore that can hand letter like Brian.

Brian, you will be greatly missed by all of us at Hawthorne Davis. Our sincere condolences to your wife and son, and we know that you’re painting with your big brother Jim now.
