12 Plumbing Misconceptions That Still Make Me Laugh 😂
This comes from a man who has personally worked in thousands of homes with thousands of clients over the years.
I promise you, we hear them all. 😂
1. “It’s only a few fittings and a couple parts.”
Absolutely.
And if those “few fittings” fail and flood a $700,000 home, suddenly nobody cares what the fittings cost.
You’re not just paying for parts. You’re paying for someone willing to put their name, license, insurance and liability behind them.
2. “Flat-rate pricing is a scam.”
Of course.
I’d much rather pay $195 an hour while the plumber takes four trips to the truck, smokes two ci******es and spends 20 minutes figuring out what he’s doing. 😂
Efficiency shouldn’t be punished.
3. “I watched a YouTube video. It looks pretty easy.”
Most plumbing IS easy…
right up until something goes wrong.
The difference between a professional and a YouTube video becomes very apparent around the time the main water shutoff won’t close.
4. “That should only take you 20 minutes.”
Sure.
If you bring your plumbing to our office, put it on the desk and let us work on it there. 😂
Otherwise, we need a fully stocked service vehicle, hundreds of thousands of dollars in company-wide tools, equipment and inventory, insurance, licensing, fuel, training, payroll, and a qualified plumber dispatched directly to your home with enough material to actually solve the problem.
But yes…
The wrench was only turning for 20 minutes. 😂
5. “I already bought the parts, so it should be cheaper.”
Perfect.
And if the valve you bought online fails inside the wall, I assume Amazon is coming over to replace the flooring. 😂
6. “My handyman can do plumbing.”
And my plumber owns a hammer.
That doesn’t make him a carpenter. 😂
7. “The last plumber only charged me $ ### .”
Then you may have accidentally discovered why you’re calling another plumber.
8. “Why do you charge a diagnostic fee just to look at it?”
Because knowing what you’re looking at is quite literally the service.
You’re not paying someone to stare at your plumbing.
You’re paying them to understand what they’re staring at. 😂
9. “It’s just a small leak.”
Water has never looked at the size of a leak and said
“Don’t worry, I’ll try not to damage anything expensive.”
10. “Why is there markup on the material?”
Because the fitting didn’t teleport itself from the supply house into a stocked service truck and magically arrive at your home exactly when you needed it.
Someone purchased it, stocked it, transported it, inventoried it and carried the cost of having it available before you ever called.
11. “You finished faster than I expected. Shouldn’t it cost less?”
This one might be my favorite. 😂
Imagine creating a pricing system where the plumber who takes three hours because he’s figuring it out gets paid MORE than the plumber who has spent 15 years learning how to solve it in 45 minutes.
Experience is supposed to make the job faster.
That’s kind of the point.
12. “Plumbers are all basically the same.”
Absolutely.
Same license?
Same insurance?
Same training?
Same equipment?
Same diagnostic ability?
Same warranties?
Same accountability?
Same experience?
But hey…
They both showed up in a van. 😂
After years in the field, thousands of homes and thousands of clients, I’ve learned something
Plumbing looks incredibly simple when everything goes right.
The value of a professional becomes apparent when it doesn’t.
