Don’t panic. But don’t brush it off, either.

After sitting unused for months, a furnace can burn off dust during its first few heating cycles. A faint dusty smell that quickly fades can be normal.

If you use the same thermostat to cool your home in the summer, you'll typically use it to control your heat in the fall and winter. When the weather starts to cool down, simply switch the mode from Cool to Heat and test that your system responds.

If nothing happens, the thermostat doesn't switch modes, or your heat isn't coming on, that's a sign something may need checking.
