Ice storms create conditions that no roof system is designed to handle perfectly, especially in Georgia.
During an ice storm, snow and ice can melt slightly during the day and then refreeze at night. This creates ice dams, where ice builds up at the eaves and prevents water from draining off the roof normally. When that happens, water can back up underneath shingles and enter areas that are otherwise watertight under normal rain conditions.
This is not a defect in the roof installation or materials. Even brand-new roofs can experience leaks during extreme freeze-thaw events because Georgia homes are not typically built with the same ice-dam protection systems used in northern climates.
Once temperatures rise and the ice clears, the roof typically performs exactly as designed. We are happy to inspect and address any affected areas once conditions are safe.
