Most people think bed bugs mean disaster.
The truth is a little calmer than that.
They’re more common than people realize, but they are not invincible. They are soft-bodied insects and they can absolutely be controlled. Even finding one bug does not automatically mean you have a full infestation. For example, a single male cannot start a population on his own.
Still… if you travel, it pays to be cautious.
Here are a few simple habits that dramatically reduce your risk when staying in hotels, Airbnbs, or other places where people come and go.

Travel Smart – Bed Bug Prevention Tips
• Keep luggage off the bed. Place it on a luggage rack or in the closet area instead.
• Do a quick mattress inspection. Pull back the sheets and lift the mattress edge if you can.
• Use a real flashlight. A cheap headlamp or flashlight works far better than a phone light.
• Soft luggage helps. Duffel bags and fabric luggage can go straight into the dryer when you get home.
• Laundry first when you return. Before unpacking anything, take all travel clothes straight to the laundry and wash/dry them.
• Inspect hard suitcases. Check seams, zippers, and corners carefully.
• Don’t forget shoes. They’re an easy place for insects to hitch a ride.

One last thing to remember:
Bed bugs aren’t only found in hotels. Any place where people sit or sleep can potentially harbor them.
If you ever find a suspicious insect:
• Collect the sample if possible.
• A professional can determine if it’s male or female and whether there is real cause for concern.
• Avoid disturbing the area until a professional inspection can be performed.
Most situations are manageable when caught early.
