A new skill can open up an entirely new direction.

Franklin came through IJB University’s first cohort and is now continuing to build his experience inside the IJB Media Lab, learning the behind-the-scenes work that goes into producing and running a podcast.

From understanding the equipment and production process to helping bring conversations to life, he’s gaining hands-on experience in a space he may not have otherwise had the opportunity to explore.

And that’s an important part of what IJB is building.

Exposure creates possibilities.
Experience builds confidence.
And sometimes, discovering what you’re capable of starts with simply getting the opportunity to try something new.

Franklin’s journey is another example of what can happen when learning doesn’t stop at the classroom.

We build skills.
We build careers.
We build communities.

The pathway into construction doesn’t look the same for everyone.

For Devin, that pathway is taking him into architecture.

As an architectural intern with IJB University, Devin is getting exposure to the planning and design side of development, learning how drawings, ideas, and decisions on paper eventually connect to what gets built in the field.

It’s another example of why exposure matters.

Construction is bigger than any one trade or role. There are opportunities in the field, design, architecture, project management, development, and beyond.

The more students are exposed to, the more they can begin to see where their own skills and interests can take them.

For Devin, this is the beginning of that journey.

We build skills.
We build careers.
We build communities.

It’s not just about the work.
It’s about understanding the responsibility behind it.

Yocontalie Jackson sat down with students to break down the difference between project management and construction management—what it means to lead, to plan, and to be accountable on a job site.

Because knowing how to do the work is one thing.

Understanding how it’s managed, executed, and done safely…
that’s what separates you.

You don’t start on the job site.

You start here.

Debbie Myers walking students through the fundamentals of heavy equipment operations, laying the groundwork for what it actually takes in the field.

Not just what the equipment is…
but how it’s used, why it matters, and what’s expected.

Because before you operate,
you have to understand.

The field comes next.

Most people never get this level of exposure.

This week, students were in class with Debbie Myers learning the fundamentals of heavy equipment operations—excavation, site work, and what it actually takes to operate in the field.

It starts in the classroom.

Understanding the equipment.
Learning the process.
Building confidence.

Not just what the equipment is…
but how it’s used, why it matters, and what’s expected in the field.

Because the goal isn’t just to learn.

It’s to be ready.

And it doesn’t stop here.

This is part of a bigger progression—moving from training to real job site experience.

That’s where it becomes real.

This is what progression looks like.

Isaiah started in Cohort 2.
Put the work in.
Earned a paid internship.

Now he’s stepping into something even bigger,
as one of the first recipients of the Step Up Program.

Not just learning a skill…
but building a future.

Everybody says “learn a skill.”

But nobody shows you how to actually turn it into a job.

That’s the gap.

IJB University closes it.

Exposure → Training → Real Work → Employment

A real pathway.
With real people.
Doing real work.

Arthur Ave is moving, and now officially coming to market.

This 3-story duplex has gone from foundation to fully framed, and is now entering the next phase of construction.

What makes this project different is who helped build it.

Students from Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 have been actively involved throughout the process—gaining real, hands-on experience while contributing to a real development in the city.

Now, it’s becoming an opportunity for someone to call it home.
