Same house, Hurlock. The siding came off and so did the shutters.

Board and batten runs vertically, so what you read on the wall is the batten line instead of a lap seam. The gable got cedar shake in the same color, and that change of texture is most of what keeps a long ranch roofline from looking like one flat sheet.

The windows are Andersen 400 Series and they went in while the house was still in housewrap, before a single panel of siding. Doing it in that order means the flashing and the wrap get detailed around the new frames once. Set the windows after the siding is up and somebody is cutting into finished wall to do the same job worse.

Commercial window replacement on a two-story brick building in Cambridge.

The openings in a building like this do not all measure the same. Masonry settles, openings get patched over the years, and two windows that look identical from the street can be inches apart. So every one gets measured on its own before anything is ordered. Get that wrong and the install turns into a week of shimming gaps and hiding them with caulk.

How old is your roof, and how sure are you?

Most people inherit a roof with the house and never get a straight answer on its age. Here is the useful part: you do not need the paperwork. Layer count, the condition of the granules, how the shingles sit against the flashing, whether the decking underneath still has bite. A roof tells you where it is in its life if somebody knows what to read.

That is what an inspection is for, and ours are completely free.

Every run has its own rise. The ground is never as level as the drawing says, the deck height is what it is, and the only way to get treads that all feel the same underfoot is to measure the thing you are actually building on and cut to it.

This one is a deck build in Fishing Creek, still in progress. Pressure-treated framing, TimberTech decking, white PVC trim. More of it to come.

New shingle roof on a brick ranch in Salisbury. Same brick, same shutters, nothing else about the house changed. A roof is not supposed to be the thing people notice, which is exactly why a tired one stands out.

That is a roof written down in chalk on the roof itself, and it is how our reps hand a job off to the crew that will do the work. Layer count, so nobody is surprised by what is under the shingles. What comes off, what goes back on.

We write it up there because a roof is easier to read when you are standing on it than when you are looking at a form back at the truck. Then we photograph it, so the scope you are quoted traces back to a spot on your actual roof.

A drone sees the surface. It will not tell you whether the decking underneath has gone soft, whether a ridge vent is actually seated, or how much give there is when you put weight on a low slope.

That is when one of our reps goes up with a ladder and works the roof by hand. Layer counts. Measurements written down where they were taken. Two layers here, four feet of wall there, thirty-eight by sixteen on that section.

Between what we can fly and what we can walk, there is not a roof on the Shore we cannot get a proper look at.

10.4 percent. That is a moisture reading off the decking in an attic, and it is the difference between a guess and a finding.

You cannot see moisture in wood. You can see the staining it leaves behind, but staining tells you something happened once, not whether it is still happening. A meter tells you what the wood is holding right now.

So when we say a roof is leaking, or that the decking under it has to come off, there is a number behind it. And when we say it is dry, there is a number behind that too.

Look at the word our rep wrote next to that circle. Potential.

Not damage. Not a claim. Potential impact, because that spot on the shingle looks like it took a hit and it needs a second set of eyes before anybody says anything stronger than that.

This is how a roof inspection actually works. We mark what we find in chalk as we go, right on the shingle, and photograph it where it sits. Layer counts, measurements, soft decking, anything that looks like hail. By the time we are back on the ground you can see the spot on your own roof instead of taking our word for it.
