Here's the big question I get every September: "Is it time to close my pool?" The answer depends on your outside temperature.

The 65° Rule
If temperatures are consistently below 65°F where you live, closing is usually your best bet. Wait until it stays below that magic number for at least a week before covering up.

Close too early (while it's still warm) and algae will throw a party under your cover all winter long. Most folks close between September 15th and October 1st, but temperature matters more than the calendar.

When it's extra hot outside, your chlorine takes a beating. It burns off faster and algae grows quicker. If you're not adjusting your routine, you're fighting a losing battle.

Here are 3 things to check to keep your chlorine in fighting shape...

1.Run Your Pump a Little Longer
Add an extra hour or two of run time on the hottest days. Moving water prevents hot spots and keeps your chemicals circulating evenly.

If you have a variable speed pump, aim for twelve to twenty-four hours of circulation during a serious heat wave.

2.Check Your CYA Levels
Cyanuric acid (CYA) protects your chlorine from the sun. Without it, you'll lose half of your chlorine in just 17 minutes.

Aim for 30 to 50 PPM and a little higher in salt water pool.

3.Shock at Night, Not During the Day
Heat makes algae grow fast, and your chlorine burns off quicker in high temperatures.

Shock your pool at least once a week during a heat wave, and always add it at night so the sun doesn't destroy it before it has a chance to work. Or you can use The Pool Care App to track when you actually need to shock based on total chlorine measurements.

Circulation, CYA, and shock. Those three things are what keep your water stable when it gets brutal outside.
