Some projects test a team more than others. The Stryker Sky High Hangar was one of them for our Steel Division this year.

The building's 200-foot clear span and 120-foot accordion-style hangar door made it far from a typical pre-engineered metal building. Then winter weather and unexpected utility delays meant reworking the crane plan and revising the er****on sequence altogether, with tighter site constraints and tougher picks along the way.

Through all of it, our team stayed focused and delivered a quality project on schedule. Take a look through the images at the hangar coming together, the finished result, and the crew who made it happen.

Tool-N-Die Inc. in Wayland, Michigan needed more room to keep growing, but their shop couldn't afford to slow down while we built it.

FCC Construction delivered a 9,000 SF manufacturing addition designed to tie directly into their existing operation, sequenced so production never missed a beat.

The project also added a new 10-ton overhead crane and a second parking lot to match the pace of their growth.

Meet Dave DeWitt: Pre-Engineered Superintendent and 28-year FCC veteran.

Dave leads multiple crews at one time, all on pre-engineered projects, and is a master problem-solver on the job site. No matter what a job throws at him, he finds a way through it and keeps things moving!

"Every company loves having the burgundy trucks on-site. They know we'll do whatever it takes to get the project done."

Today, Dave runs his crews from start to finish and calls FCC his work family. His path to FCC started on a soccer field: He was asked to coach a coworker's kid's team despite knowing next to nothing about the game, and that connection is what brought him to the team!

Off the job, you'll find him relaxing at home with his wife and their two dogs, or out working the yard on his tractor.

Every piece of steel in this building was detailed and fabricated in our shop in Caledonia, then trucked up to Traverse City.

FCC provided the detailing and fabrication for the new 40,000-square-foot Freshwater Research and Innovation Center, including 227 tons of structural steel. We also fabricated and installed select miscellaneous steel on the project.

The design called for decorative braces and perforated stair risers, so the pieces had to be right the first time. The site sits along a busy roadway with limited room to stage, which meant every delivery was planned around traffic and crane access.

Big congratulations to Dave Lucas, FCC's Director of Construction, on being named to Crain's Grand Rapids Business 2026 40 Under 40!

Dave's path started on his father's job sites, then took him through Michigan State, five years as a field superintendent in Phoenix, and back home to help grow FCC's general contracting division.

Today, Dave handles business development and pre-construction for FCC. The best part of the job? "Building a team that succeeds together."

We had a lot to celebrate at the 2026 ABC Western Michigan Excellence in Construction Awards!

Our Private Beach Residence received an Excellence in Construction Award for Miscellaneous Steel, and FCC was also recognized with a STEP Safety Management System STEP Bronze Award. We were also proud to have our Kawasaki project among this year’s EIC nominees.

A great night celebrating the work our teams put in every day and the people behind these projects. Thank you to ABC Western Michigan for another great event, and congratulations to all of this year’s honorees!
