Bloodletting in these Hills. The winner of the 2025 Appalachian Playwriting Festival at the Parkway Playhouse. This was the first set built and designed for this riveting story about Coal Mine unions. I abstracted this space by exposing the framing and dilapidation of the company store that the show takes place in. The company store does not belong to the family that lives inside of it, so abstracting it in this way emphasizes their servitude, instability, and lack of ownership.

Smoke on the mountain. Creating this quaint church was enjoyable and uplifting. Painting the walls with a worn-down whitewash treatment gave the whole set a lived-in antique feeling. Using plexiglass, window film, and electrical tape, we created realistic stained glass windows for the church. The show was filled with wonderful music and witty humor.

Descendants: The Musical. This show had a fast turnaround, so we reimagined various elements of the Mitilda set to create this show. I created a brick stencil and showed the students how to use it to make a facade brick proscenium. We used fluorescent spray paint to give the set a back-alley feeling, and of course, used proper PPE. The lighting in this show transformed the set in many beautiful ways.

Noises off. This show is famous for its rotating set. To achieve this effect, we created a central platform on a pivot point and two detachable units. This method was rather successful, and many audience members stayed during the intermission to watch the scene change. This video demonstrates the process of the scene change.

A critic came to the show and left an glowing review of the show and the set!

Matilda. For this show, I used many pieces of theatrical stock. I wanted to use stock that had been misplaced or unused for many years. Matilda is often forgotten about or ignored despite her brilliance. I used scenery from the theater that had been forgotten about and ignored to exemplify Matilda's character in the set. I used large round platforms from the 80s, which had not been used in many years. Our library was throwing out old books, so I took them and collaged them on the proscenium and on the old platforms. I was told by our old tech director that the brick arches are from the movie Patch Adams, salvaged from the set after it was filmed in Asheville.

A Streetcar Named Desire. This is the first black box show that I fully designed and built. Creating a two-level set with a spiral staircase inside a small black box was quite the challenge. I used garden fences from Lowe's to create a New Orleans French Quarter wrought iron balcony. On the second level sat a jazz band that serenaded us throughout the show. The close proximity of the show created a visceral and humanising experience.

Oklahoma. This was the first show that I built and designed for the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre. We created a series of walls made from reclaimed wood, two of which could move for scene changes and fully rotate to become Jud's cabin. I found two large wood beams in the Pitman basement that became a climbable windmill structure.

Our Town. This classic play by Thornton Wilder is famous for its minimalistic and avant-garde set. The director of this show had an interest in using pallets from Hurricane Helene to construct the set. These pallets were used to carry supplies into Burnsville during the natural disaster. I use these pallets to create the large back wall, the moon, and the set pieces. It is powerful to take a mitiral from a tragic event and transform it into something beautiful using the power of art.
