You probably know you’re supposed to Drop, Cover, and Hold On during an earthquake. The harder part is remembering to do it when the room actually starts moving. 😬
That’s why the Great California ShakeOut gives families across the Bay Area a chance to practice before they ever need to use those skills for real. This year’s drill takes place October 15 at 10:15 a.m.
It's the perfect time to:
🚿 Make sure your water heater is properly strapped down
🔥 Install or test an earthquake gas shutoff valve
💧 Consider installing an automatic water shutoff system
🔧 Schedule a gas line and appliance shutoff valve inspection
⚡ Call Caccia to schedule an electrical panel safety inspection
It's also important to make sure you know where your gas, water, and electrical shutoffs are and how to use them in an emergency. No matter what you need along the way, Caccia is here to help!

Gas water heater replacement and earthquake strap upgrade in San Mateo, California

We replaced a 50-gallon gas water heater for a homeowner in San Mateo this week and brought the whole installation up to code while we were at it.

The homeowner already had a lot of the right pieces in place, so we reused the existing venting and the wall backing. The new heater is hard piped in with a thermal expansion tank mounted above it, which takes on the extra pressure when water heats up and expands.

We also swapped out the old earthquake straps for new ones. California requires water heaters to be strapped so they can't tip over in an earthquake, and a tank that falls can break gas and water lines on its way down.

On the gas side, we moved the drip leg over and ran a new flex line to the heater. The drip leg catches debris and moisture before it gets to the gas valve.

The old drain pan was too small for the heater, so we put in a new one that fits. It ties into a drain line that runs all the way outside, so if the tank ever leaks the water has somewhere to go.

The Great ShakeOut is coming up on October 15, when people across California practice earthquake drills. If you're doing a drill at home, take a minute to look at your water heater and make sure it's strapped in tight.

Not sure if yours is up to code? Call Caccia and we'll come take a look.

The first big rains can expose problems that have been building all summer. A little preparation now can help prevent water damage, unexpected plumbing issues, and stressful emergency calls later.

Before the rain arrives, make sure you:

- Clear your main drain and remove debris to make sure water has a clear path to drain away.
- Test your sump pump to check that it starts, runs, and moves water properly.
- Inspect your water heater and look for leaks, corrosion, or signs that your system may need attention.
- Check your outdoor shutoffs and make sure you know where your water shutoff valves are and that they’re accessible in an emergency.
- Inspect drainage around your home for pooling water, blocked downspouts, or areas where rain could collect near your foundation.

A few simple checks now can go a long way toward keeping your home ready for the wet season.

Today, Cristian helped a homeowner with their tankless water heater maintenance by hooking up a descaling pump to flush out the sediment and keep the system running efficiently and reliably. Afterward, we did our system vitals check to help the homeowner understand their home's setup and any potential issues that may come up in the future.

What we did:
- Flushed the tankless water heater
- Cleared out mineral buildup and sediment
- Checked the system connections and setup
- Helped restore proper system performance

Regular tankless water heater flushing helps prevent mineral buildup, maintain efficiency, extend the life of your unit and reduce the risk of costly repairs down the road. If you have hard water, routine maintenance is especially important.
