Five Tips for Winterizing Your Trees and Shrubs

As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, your trees and shrubs might need some extra care to prepare for winter! Here are five key steps you can take:

1. Water well before the ground freezes. A deep soak before the ground freezes helps trees and shrubs store the moisture they need throughout the winter months.

2. Mulch to protect roots. A 2–4 inch layer of mulch around the base of trees and shrubs acts as insulation, keeping roots warmer and conserving soil moisture. Just be sure to keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk or stems to help prevent rot.

3. Protect against the elements. Cold winds and winter sun can cause drying and cracking, particularly in young or thin-barked trees out in the open. Consider wrapping trunks with tree wrap or using burlap screens to shield vulnerable plants from wind and sunscald.

4. Prune with care. Late fall and early winter are good times to remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, though—wait until spring for shaping cuts, when your plants have more energy to recover.

5. Guard against wildlife. In winter, deer, rabbits, and rodents may feed on bark and twigs, which can seriously damage or even kill your plants! Protect your trees and shrubs with fencing, trunk guards, or repellents if this is a known problem in your neighborhood.

Final Tip: Each species has its own needs, so always consider the specific requirements of your trees and shrubs. If you'd like some professional help winterizing, get the experts! Call or text Tree Trouble at (208) 432-2221, or you can contact our certified arborist at (208) 421-1030.

We also sell mulch in bulk, $30/sq yard! Call or text for more info.
