How to tell if you actually need to file a hail claim
(without getting on your roof)
After a storm, the first thing to check isn’t your roof—it’s everything around it. Adjusters call this collateral damage, and it’s what they look for before they ever climb up.
Here’s what to look for from the ground:
• Downspouts – look for round dents. If you rub chalk across them, hail hits will stay clean and stand out. Just because you don't see damage on one, doesn't mean the others didn't get hit. Storms are directional and a lot of times downspouts on the front of the house may show damage but the ones on the back don't (and vice versa).
• Electrical boxes & Satellite Dish – you’ll see splatter marks where the surface coating has been knocked off.
• Soft Metals – mailbox, roof vents, AC unit. Dents or scattered impact marks are a strong sign of hail.
• Window screens – small random tears or dimpling
• Fences – fresh marks or spotting on stained wood
• Ground and gutters – shingle granules collecting below downspouts or along the edges
You likely won't see all of this... BUT if you see none of this then there’s a good chance you shouldn't file a claim.
This is exactly what adjusters look for first. If they don’t see it, they’re already leaning towards a denial before they ever step on the roof.
