Beneath the surface of every dam lies a hidden world that few people ever see.
Our commercial divers recently completed an underwater inspection of critical dam infrastructure, evaluating submerged, concrete, intake structures, gates, scour conditions, and other components that play a vital role in public safety and water management.
Many of America’s dams were constructed decades ago - some over 100 years ago - and continue to serve communities by providing flood control, water storage, irrigation, and hydroelectric power. While these structures may appear unchanged from above, constant exposure to water, sediment movement, erosion, and time can create challenges below the surface that can only be properly assessed through hands-on underwater inspections.
Commercial divers are often the first line of defense in identifying developing issues before they become costly repairs or safety concerns. By documenting structural conditions, locating deterioration, and supporting maintenance and rehabilitation efforts, underwater inspections help extend the service life of critical infrastructure while protecting the communities that depend on it.
It’s demanding work performed in low-visibility environments where precision, experience, and safety are paramount - but it’s work that helps keep some of our nations most important infrastructures operating as intended.
