Truss Education Series | Part 2: The Hip Roof System

A hip roof may look like one simple roof from the outside, but underneath, there’s a lot more going on.

Unlike a basic gable roof where many of the trusses may be similar, a hip roof is created by multiple truss configurations working together. Common trusses make up the main portion of the roof, while girders, stepdowns, jacks and other components help transition the framing toward the hip.

Each piece has a specific job, and the entire package has to be designed to work together. That’s why accurate plans, correct bearing locations and proper truss placement are so important—the individual trusses are only one part of the complete roof system.

The interesting part? As you move toward the hip, the trusses can progressively change in height and configuration to create the roof shape you eventually see from the outside.

Different pieces. One engineered system.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue breaking down some of the truss configurations you’re likely to see in residential construction around Arizona.

DID YOU KNOW?
Bearing locations matter. Trusses are designed around specific support points, so changes to walls or bearings can affect the truss design.

Two Copperstate Truss team members attended BCMC 2026 in Ohio this September to learn about new technology and development shaping how we design and build trusses

They arrived to a surprise… Kathy’s photo was featured on the main event signage! We are excited to see a member of our team front and center.

Truss Education Series | Part 1: Why Triangles?

Ever wonder why you see so many triangles inside a roof truss?

There’s a very practical reason: triangles are incredibly strong shapes. Unlike a square or rectangle, which can change shape when force is applied, a triangle can’t change shape without changing the length of one of its sides.

In a truss, the top chord, bottom chord and webs create a series of interconnected triangles. As weight from the roof is applied, those members work together to transfer the forces through the truss and ultimately to its bearing points.

That’s also why trusses with different spans and loads can have very different web patterns. The configuration is designed around the needs of that particular truss—not simply how it looks. The Alpine reference we use shows everything from King Post and Fink trusses to Double Fink and Modified Queen configurations, with increasingly complex patterns as the examples move into longer spans.

Simple shapes. Smart engineering. Strong roofs.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a closer look at some of the different truss configurations you may see in homes and buildings around Arizona.

Did you know? The webs aren't just there to fill the space inside a truss. Each member is part of the engineered system that transfers forces through the truss—which is why truss members should never be cut or altered in the field without an engineered repair.
