One hundred and eight-seven years ago today, 60 men signed the Texas Declaration of Independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos, announcing the formal break from Mexico during the Texas Revolution. The Declaration proclaimed that the Mexican government had abrogated its commitments made by the 1824 Constitution and had "ceased to protect the lives, liberty, and property of the people, from whom its legitimate powers are derived." The massacres at the Alamo and Goliad would follow respectively on March 6 and 27, with Texian victory at San Jacinto on April 21. A mere 40 years later, Texas A&M would be established as a state land grant college, and the culture of the revolution, including core values such as Leadership, Loyalty, and Selfless Service, would be forever infused into the institutional fabric of the Corps of Cadets. Today, as we celebrate that spirit of Texas independence and remember those who died at its creation, we also remember that those values live on in the hearts of the cadets of our own day.
Happy Texas Independence Day
