Stucco doesn't tell you it needs attention the way siding does. It rarely peels. Instead it goes chalky, fades unevenly and starts showing fine cracks.

Two easy checks this fall:
- Rub your palm on a sunny wall. If it comes away chalky, the paint is wearing thin.
- Walk the house early morning or late afternoon. Low sun across the wall shows cracks and old patches you'd never see at noon.
- On every stucco home here, cracks were repaired and the texture was matched before paint, so the finished walls read as one surface.

If you'd like a second set of eyes on yours, our estimators are glad to walk it with you.

Painting new built-ins is one of the most common projects homeowners take on themselves, and it's also one of the easiest to get wrong. New wood and MDF don't grip ordinary wall paint, and shelves take more daily wear than almost any other surface in the house.

If you're planning to do it yourself, this is the process we used on the room above:
- Caulk every seam and fill every nail hole first
- One coat of a bonding primer/sealer so the finish holds to the wood
- Two coats of a hybrid alkyd acrylic semi-gloss urethane, with a light sanding between coats. It levels out smooth like an oil paint but cleans up with water
- Give the shelves at least a week before loading them with books, even when they feel dry

One detail worth borrowing: the walls, crown, windows and built-ins are all the same blue. The walls are a washable matte and the woodwork is semi-gloss, so the room reads as one color with just enough contrast to show off the carpentry.

If you'd rather hand the brushes to someone else, we're glad to help. D&D Decorators has been painting interiors across the Golden Isles since 1986, and every project carries our three-year workmanship warranty. Estimates are free at dndcompany.com or (912) 575-6733.

When a business changes its sign, the old one leaves holes behind. On stucco, those repairs show if the texture and color aren't matched carefully.

We recently finished this project at the terminal at the St. Simons Island airport. From a boom lift, our crew removed loose stucco, filled every hole with hydraulic cement, applied a stucco patch to match the existing finish, primed with Loxon conditioner and applied two coats of Loxon XP matched to the existing color. The new sign went up on a clean, even wall.

Inside, we repaired drywall where new electrical work was done and patched the wall behind the front desk, painting each wall corner to corner so the repairs don't show.

There’s something satisfying about an exterior where every detail finally looks finished together.

Fresh shake siding. Crisp white trim. Dark shutters. Refinished entry doors. And a lot of prep work behind the parts you actually see.

For this project, our team worked across the exterior siding, soffits, fascia, band boards, vents, trim, shutters, doors and garage door, repairing, sanding, caulking, priming and refinishing each surface according to what it needed.

The result is less about a dramatic color change and more about bringing the entire property back to a clean, intentional finish.

And September is a good time to start thinking about the exterior projects that have been sitting on the list.

You don’t need to know whether you need a full repaint, a few repairs, or something in between before calling us.

Start with an exterior assessment. We’ll walk the property with you, identify what actually needs attention, and help separate the work that makes sense to handle now from what can wait.

Get your exterior looked at now and have a plan in place for fall.

Before you spend a dollar on the outside of your house, walk around it one evening this week. No ladder, nothing to buy, about ten minutes. Four spots will tell you almost everything about whether you are looking at a paint job or a carpentry job.

1. The bottom of your door and window trim. Take a flathead screwdriver and press. Sound wood pushes back. If the tip sinks in, that board is finished.

2. The ends of your fascia boards. Corners and butt joints, where two boards meet. Failure starts at the ends and works inward, so the middle of a board can look perfect while the last eight inches are gone.

3. The base of porch columns and rail posts, where the post meets the deck or the slab. Look for separation, a gap that was not there before, or a post that has started to lean.

4. Caulk joints where two materials meet. Press one with your thumb. Good caulk has give. Hard, brittle or pulling away from the joint means it is no longer sealing anything.

If everything pushes back, you are in good shape and you can stop reading.

If something gives, that is carpentry, not paint, and it has to be cut out and replaced before anything gets coated over it. We do that with our own carpenters, on payroll, on the same crew, which is the reason we can put both on one schedule instead of waiting on somebody else to show up.

If you are not sure what you are looking at, take a photo and send it to us. Somebody here will tell you honestly whether it is worth an estimator's trip.

These stairs didn’t need to be torn out. They needed the right repairs in the right places.

We found localized deterioration in the handrail and other exterior wood components, along with failing paint and joints that needed attention. Our team removed the damaged material where needed, treated the affected wood, rebuilt the areas with exterior epoxy filler, sanded the repairs smooth, recaulked, primed and repainted the stairs and rail components.

The finished staircase looks refreshed, but the part that matters most is everything that happened before the finish coat went on.

And this is a good reminder heading into fall: you don’t have to wait until you’re ready for a complete exterior repaint to address the handful of areas that have been bothering you.

Have a soft spot, peeling section, cracked joint or questionable piece of exterior trim? Start there.

We can take a look, determine what actually needs repair, and build the estimate around the work your home needs.

A little proof that you don’t have to redo the whole room to completely change how it feels. 🌿

These built-ins went from a neutral to Farrow & Ball Bancha in Full Gloss, and suddenly the shelving became part of the room instead of just sitting in the background.

Getting that finish right took more than changing the color. Our team filled the existing screw holes, repaired the surfaces, sanded everything smooth, caulked the joints, primed the built-ins and applied two finish coats.

The warm green against the existing wood floors and rug is exactly the kind of transformation we love.

Have one room, built-in, ceiling or door you’ve been thinking about changing this fall? You don’t need to have the color figured out before getting started.

Start by having us look at the project and put together the scope. Once you decide to move forward with D&D, we’ll help you work through the colors, finishes and samples needed to get it right before painting begins.

A few gray samples on the wall don't look like much... until you see the whole house.

This exterior went from warm yellow to a Sherwin Williams gray, paired with crisp white trim, and it completely changed the feel of the home.

Our team carried the new palette across the Hardie siding, painted brick, garage door, soffits, fascia, trim and other exterior details so everything reads as one finished design.

Sometimes the biggest transformation isn't changing the house, it's finally finding the color that fits it.

Not sure which color will actually look right on your home? You won't have to figure that out alone, and you won't have to choose off a paper fan deck.

A color consultation is included with every project we paint. Once your quote is approved, we bring the colors you're considering, put real samples directly on your exterior, and walk through them with you in the actual light and surroundings before any paint goes on.

It starts with a free, no obligation estimate. The color work comes with the job. https://shorturl.at/IZfp9

Marsh-View Deck Revival |📍St. Simons Island

Salt air doesn't negotiate. This creek-side deck had reached the point most coastal decks eventually reach: cracked boards, soft joists, peeling rail paint, benches bleached pale by the sun. Past the point of a touch-up, and the owners had oyster roasts on the calendar.

Here's what a restoration actually looks like when it's done right:
→ We replaced the compromised joists, rebuilt the steps, and straightened the sagging posts. Structure first. Always.
→ New decking where boards had split, every cut end back-primed before it went down. That detail is invisible on day one and it's the whole ballgame in year five.
→ Full pressure wash, then two coats of deck enamel on rails and floor.
→ Clear-sealed the cedar bench, upgraded the lighting and hardware while we had access open.

The result: a deck that feels brand new underfoot, ready for fall weather and a full house, and the owners got years of added service life without paying for a full rebuild.

We're booking fall deck and dock restorations now, with completion before the holidays.

A fresh finish can completely redefine exposed architectural wood.

The porch ceilings, beams, rafters, and corbels on this coastal home had developed a faded, uneven appearance from continued exterior exposure.

Our team:
• Removed loose and deteriorating finish
• Sanded the wood where needed
• Prepared the exposed beams, rafters, soffits, and trim
• Applied a color-matched acrylic semi-solid exterior stain
• Created a richer, more consistent finish across the architectural woodwork

The result preserves the natural character of the porch while giving the entire elevation a cleaner and more intentional appearance.

D&D Decorators provides professional exterior staining and painting throughout the Golden Isles.
