🌲 Another harvest is underway in Edgecomb! 🌲
This one is producing some beautiful Red Oak sawlogs and excellent beech firewood.
This forest has an exquisite amount of smooth-bark beech (genetically resistant to beech bark disease) and we're marking all of it to leave, along with every sugar maple and yellow birch. Those healthy trees, along with remaining oaks, will be the backbone of this stand for decades to come.
The beech that isn't smooth-barked is in rough shape. It's been hit hard by beech bark disease (beech scale) and now beech leaf disease too, so those trees are coming out. Removing them gives the healthy, resistant trees room to grow and helps set this forest up for a better future.
