Thirty-five years and two generations of ownership go into every estimate Arbortec writes.

A tree can look completely healthy above ground while its roots are slowly strangling it below.

Girdling roots form when a root grows in a circle around the trunk instead of outward, gradually squeezing the tree's own vascular system as both keep growing. It's common in trees that were planted too deep or had their root flare buried by mulch or fill dirt over the years. It's also common on trees planted with the burlap or wire basket left in place, which can constrict the root flare in much the same way over time.

Signs include a trunk that goes straight into the ground without flaring out, or thinning canopy and dieback in an otherwise mature, established tree. By the time symptoms show up above ground, the roots have often been compressed for years.

Caught early, exposing and cutting the offending root can add years to a tree's life. Left alone, it's one of the more common reasons a healthy-looking mature tree declines and dies, and it's one of the more preventable causes of decline, but only if it's caught before the damage is too extensive to correct.

The first hard freeze can hit cottonwoods and elms harder than most homeowners expect, especially after a dry summer.

Trees that went into fall already stressed from water restrictions have less reserve to handle a sudden temperature drop. Bark can split, and weaker limbs that survived the summer are more likely to fail once the wood stiffens in the cold. Elms in particular can hold onto stress from a dry summer well into fall, showing little visible sign of it until temperatures swing hard.

A pre-freeze check looks for deadwood, cracks, and limbs already under stress so they can come down on our schedule, not the tree's. That's especially true for trees near driveways, power lines, or roof lines, where a failed limb does more than just yard damage. It's a much better outcome than dealing with a failure during the first real storm of the season.

North Metro Denver's freeze-thaw pattern makes this a yearly issue, not a one-time concern. Getting ahead of it now is worth the call.

A weak branch union doesn't always need to come down. Sometimes it just needs support.

Cabling and bracing reinforce limb unions that show early signs of stress, split bark, included bark, or a codominant trunk structure that's more likely to fail in heavy wind or a wet snow load. Installed correctly, the system redistributes weight and limits movement without changing how the tree looks day to day. Left unaddressed, that kind of union is one of the more common reasons a mature tree fails during a wind event, rather than a healthy limb simply breaking off.

North Metro Denver sees enough wind events and sudden snow loads that this kind of preventive work pays off, especially on mature trees that would take decades to replace. It's a fraction of the cost of removal, and it keeps a healthy tree in the ground.

It's a job that requires real judgment about how much support a specific union needs, which is why it's handled by certified arborists rather than a general labor crew. Not every tree is a candidate, but a lot of them are. A quick assessment is the only way to know for sure.

Truly a great experience from start to finish. They took a lot of time to understand what I needed, and to give me an accurate estimate based on that. The crew came out in advance of the work to get a better idea of what was needed. And then during the actual day of work, they did exactly what was specified and did a great job and left everything super clean. Highly recommend!

Like most things, cabling and bracing may be essential to the longevity of your trees, but too much of a good thing can become a problem if left unattended. Ensure you are keeping an eye on any hardware installed on your trees, or you may need an arborist to perform emergency service on a suffocating tree.
