Lawn watering restrictions protect the water supply, but they can quietly put mature trees under the same drought stress as the grass around them.

Deep, infrequent watering at the drip line, well outside the trunk, reaches the roots that actually support a large tree, while surface watering mostly benefits shallow-rooted turf instead.

Mulching around the base conserves soil moisture and reduces competition from grass roots, a simple step that makes a measurable difference for trees already stressed by heat and reduced irrigation.

A root health check can identify which mature trees are struggling most and need a targeted watering plan before drought stress turns into decline.

Pruning during the tail end of summer, before trees fully shift into dormancy, gives cuts time to begin closing before winter sets in.

This window also makes it easier to spot storm damage and weak branch unions that hid behind full summer foliage, while avoiding the extra stress that heavy pruning in peak summer heat can cause.

Cottonwoods and elms across the Denver metro area, both prone to dropping large limbs without warning, benefit especially from a late-summer inspection and selective pruning before the first fall winds arrive.

Scheduling now also means avoiding the backlog that builds once the weather turns and everyone calls at once.

These guys showed up as scheduled, even on a crappy snow day and did an amazing job. We had multiple trees trimmed and a couple removed, other than the trees looking amazing, there was nothing to indicate that work had been done around our home as everything was well cared for and cleaned up. Highly recommend ArborTec, this is a great company with an amazing staff.

Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in communities across the Front Range, and any ash tree in the North Metro Denver area should now be considered at risk.

Thinning canopy, D-shaped exit holes in the bark, and increased woodpecker activity are early signs of infestation, and they often show up in the upper canopy first, where they are easy to miss from the ground.

Untreated ash trees typically decline within two to four years of infestation, and dead ash wood becomes brittle and hazardous quickly, which changes the removal timeline from routine to urgent.

Treatment options exist for ash trees caught early, but confirming an infestation and weighing treatment against removal both call for a professional inspection rather than guesswork.

Arbortec has operated as a family business since 1989, and the shift from first to second generation did not change what the company stands for: honesty, integrity, and genuine care for the customer's needs.

That mindset shapes how estimates are given, no pressure toward unnecessary work, and how crews treat a property, protecting lawns, gardens, and neighboring structures on every job, not just the tree itself.

TCIA membership and ISA Certified Arborists on staff back that up with real credentials, but the values came first. Equipment and certifications support the work; they do not replace the commitment behind it.

North Metro Denver has changed a lot since 1989. What has not changed is how Arbortec treats every customer's property.

Canopy raising removes lower branches to lift the crown of a tree, and it is one of the most common pruning requests we get across North Metro Denver, for reasons beyond just clearance.

On mature cottonwoods and elms, raising the canopy improves airflow and light pe*******on, reduces the chance of low limbs failing under snow load, and makes room for foot traffic, mowing, or a driveway without compromising the tree's structure.

Done correctly, this is measured pruning guided by where the central leader and major scaffold limbs are, not indiscriminate cutting. Removing too much too fast stresses the tree and invites decay.

If low branches on a mature tree are becoming a hassle, there is a right way and a wrong way to fix it.
