From bare bones to a rock-solid foundation! πŸ”¨πŸ

Check out this transformation based on image_1.png and image_2.png: We completely tore off the old, worn-out wood shake and cleared the roof right down to the original spaced sheathing (skip decking)[cite: 1]. You can’t just lay new shingles over gaps like that!

To do it right and meet today's building standards, our team has fully sheeted the entire roof with brand-new OSB wood decking. Now, this home finally has the sturdy, flat, and secure foundation it needs for the new roof.

Doing it the right way, every single time. No shortcuts here! πŸ’ͺ✨

A little roofing history on the job site today! πŸ“œπŸ
You’re looking at a traditional wood shake deckβ€”a framing style common in older homes (1960s-70s) but rarely seen in homes built after 1980. When we tore off the old layers, we uncovered this rare, spaced decking. You simply cannot lay plywood or install new shingles over a surface like this. Doing it right requires removing the compromised pieces and rebuilding a solid, code-compliant OSB/Plywood foundation from the ground up. Older homes take extra care, precision, and experience. No shortcutsβ€”ever. πŸ’―πŸ“ž DM us for a honest, thorough roof inspection!

🏠 "It's not leaking, so it's fine" β€” is it though?

We hear this a lot. And a roof can genuinely hold back rain for a while even after it's past its prime. But "not leaking yet" and "in good shape" are two very different things.

On this roof, here's what's actually going on:
πŸ”΄ Ridge cap shingles curling and lifting β€” the seal has failed
🟑 Cracked seams along the ridge β€” shingles have gone brittle with age
πŸ”΅ Heavy algae staining across the field β€” moisture is sitting on the roof longer than it should

None of these are leaks. All of them are exactly what shows up right before one β€” usually during the next heavy storm, not on a calm day when it's easy to inspect.

If your roof looks like this, it doesn't mean call 911 β€” it means it's a good time for a real inspection, before "not leaking" turns into "emergency tarp."

🏚️ Ever seen a roof deck like this?

This is old wood plank (skip) sheathing β€” spaced wood boards instead of solid plywood. It's a telltale sign of a home built before the 1960s, often originally roofed with wood shakes rather than asphalt shingles.

Why it matters if you're reroofing:
Most asphalt shingle manufacturers require a solid, continuous deck to honor their product warranty. Gaps between old boards (even 1/8"+) can cause shingles to sag, nails to miss solid wood, and premature failure.

Bottom line: if your home has this type of deck, a proper reroof means adding solid plywood sheathing over the old planks β€” not just laying new shingles on top. Skipping this step can void your shingle warranty even if the shingles themselves are top quality.

It's an extra step most homeowners don't expect, but it's what keeps your new roof protected and your warranty valid.

πŸ› οΈ Roof Vent Sealing 101: Bottom to Top

Sealing a roof vent isn't just slapping on some sealant β€” it's about layering it correctly so water always flows down and off, never in.

1️⃣ Bottom course of shingles goes down first, tucked under where the vent base will sit
2️⃣ Sealant is applied along the base/fl**ge, covering every nail head and seam
3️⃣ Top shingles overlap DOWN over the fl**ge β€” never the other way around

This bottom-to-top shingle layering is what actually keeps water out. A vent that's sealed backwards (top shingles under, not over) will leak β€” sealant alone can't fix bad layering.

If your vents look cracked, curled, or the sealant's dried out, it's worth having them checked before the next big rain.

πŸ”§ Behind the scenes: installing a drip edge

Before the new shingles go on, we run drip edge along every roof edge β€” fitted in place, then secured under the underlayment for a clean, watertight finish.

Why it matters: drip edge directs water away from the fascia and into the gutter, protecting the wood underneath from years of hidden rot.

If your roof doesn't have one, ask us about adding it during your next reroof β€” it's a small upgrade with a big payoff.

🏠 Ridge Vent vs. Turtle Vents β€” What's Right for Your Roof?

If your home has a lower roof pitch, chances are your attic space is tighter β€” and that often means weaker ventilation. Here's how ridge vents compare to the old-school turtle (box) vents:

βœ… Ridge Vent Benefits:
- Runs the full length of the roof peak = continuous, even airflow
- Pulls hot, moist air out from the highest point of the attic (where heat collects most)
- Low profile β€” blends into the roofline, no bulky boxes sticking up
- Pairs with soffit vents for balanced intake/exhaust ventilation
- Less prone to leaks than multiple individual turtle vent penetrations

⚠️ Turtle Vents:
- Cheaper to install, works fine on simple roofs
- But each one only vents a small, localized area
- More roof penetrations = more potential leak points
- Less effective on low-pitch or complex roof lines

Is it worth switching? If you're already replacing your roof, upgrading to a ridge vent system is a smart, cost-effective way to improve attic airflow β€” especially on lower-pitch homes where heat and moisture tend to build up. Better ventilation = longer shingle life + lower attic temps + less strain on your AC.
