Is there still a tax credit for renovating in 2026?
Straight answer: the big federal one is gone. Here is what is not.
⚠️ The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit — the one that paid up to 30% on insulation, windows, doors and heat pumps — terminated for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. If a contractor is still selling you windows on the strength of the 30% credit, they are quoting an expired law.
Still live in New York:
▪ The NYC Green Roof Property Tax Abatement (RPTL §499-bbb) — a per-square-foot abatement on a qualifying green roof, capped at $200,000 per building, available for tax years commencing before July 1, 2031
▪ It requires at least 50% of eligible roof space covered, with at least 80% of the vegetative layer in live plants
▪ The PTA3 form must reach DOB by March 15 to take effect that July 1. Miss it and you wait a full year
▪ NYSERDA residential programs, which run on their own funding cycles
The overlap worth knowing: if a full roof deck replacement already triggers Local Law 92/94, you are installing a green roof or solar regardless. Doing it as a green roof can put an abatement against a cost you were being forced to spend anyway.
