Drawings from a project of ours in Germantown, upstate NY. We designed an addition to the existing house and integrated the building into the site to create a more intricate and grounded relationship with the landscape.

Work in progress shots taken by our client in Delaware. Framing is complete and our much deliberated glass openings framing views throughout the house are taking shape. Next up are subdivisions on the upper level to form bedrooms, although I’m tempted to leave it as-is!

As we warm up for the new year it's also helpful to reflect on where we've been. I'm so thankful for all of the experiences 2022 gave us, and all of the rewarding projects we are proud to have been, and continue to be involved in.

Thank you to all of our clients, collaborators, friends, and family for your continued support and encouragement.

We're excited about the future and can't wait to see what 2023 holds.
Wishing everyone a healthy and happy new year!

Studies for a house in the central historic district of Lewes, a small coastal town in Delaware. The new building is on the site of an older structure which was unusually positioned tight to two lot lines and surrounded by adjacent compact lots with houses. Part of our approach uses box-hedge walls, similar to those found in English formal gardens, to screen the house and fuse the open-plan first-floor living spaces with the intimate garden.

Hill House, by the architects MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple, sits atop a windswept hill, maximizing the panoramic views of its site on Nova Scotia's coastline. The form of the house takes on the sculptural quality of a landform in a direct response to the landscape conditions. Two structures - house and barn - sit opposite one another and are linked by a walled courtyard garden, intended to provide a sheltered microclimate. At the interior, long, horizontal windows and sheltered openings frame dramatic views of the landscape. The house is constructed using traditional timber framing craftsmanship and is clad in cedar shingles.

Architect Harry Seidler's, Rose Seidler House is a great example of the interaction of architecture and landscape. Stone retaining walls across the rugged bushland site locate and support the house. They also continue inside the house, anchoring the staircase, and forming the fireplace. The axonometric drawing illustrates this beautifully.
The architect said - "The rectilinear form of the house is quite deliberate to be in strong contrast to the natural form of the land. I prefer to see beautiful nature – green trees and grass offset by a man-made geometric square. I think that contrast between nature and what is built is to me a source of what we call a tension."
