5,784 plants later, and the impact is just beginning! The native plantings installed across our projects last year are already sequestering up to 20,000 lbs of CO₂ annually, equivalent to avoiding more than 2,000 gallons of gasoline burned or roughly 24,000 miles driven in a passenger vehicle each year.
That is also comparable to the annual carbon uptake of approximately 5–10 acres of mature forest.
As these landscapes mature over the next 10–20 years, that number is projected to grow beyond 300,000 lbs of CO₂ captured annually, equivalent to removing roughly 30 passenger vehicles from the road each year or offsetting the electricity use of approximately 30–35 U.S. homes annually.
This is the long view of landscape design. Not just how a space looks when it is installed, but what it becomes over time.
Designing with intentional plant communities means working with systems that continue to give back. These landscapes capture carbon, rebuild soil structure, support pollinators and biodiversity, and help offset emissions associated with conventional landscape practices.
