Tonight, while I was unwinding, I read an article about Dolly and the service with her family and how it was privately held. I’m so glad that one aspect of who she was, she got to decide to keep private.
It took me to a memory that I guess I had put out of my mind.
When my daddy entered the last few weeks on this earth, he had really lost his ability to speak, which was hard. I sure did love to hear him (if you knew him, you know why).
When I would arrive, he would have notes he had made to ask my thoughts on, or I guess things that he needed me to do. One day, when I was sitting with him, he got his little notebook out, and it said:
“Open casket?”
At that moment, I didn’t see my daddy sick. I didn’t see him as frail. I saw him as the big, strong man that he had always been, with his strong hands that built those cars, drove those tractor-trailers, and gave me and my children hugs when we needed comfort.
I told him that although he was still as handsome as ever, I thought it best to let us say goodbye in private. We laid my daddy to rest in a UT shirt, a comfortable sweater and what we liked to call his “dancing shoes.”
I don’t know why I thought about this tonight, but I guess it’s because I read that people couldn’t believe Dolly just wanted to be laid to rest in privacy with her family💗🦋
