Most of y’all may have noticed we haven’t opened up our roadside stand this year. We decided to take a little step back from our homesteading activities while we focus on some other pursuits we currently have on our plates.

Homesteading has been such a special chapter for our family, and while things may look a little quieter right now, we’re grateful for all the support and kindness you’ve shown us along the way.

This isn’t goodbye forever from homesteading — just a goodbye for now. We truly hope to return to it again someday when the timing feels right.

Thank you all for following along with our journey. 🌱

Our girls are going through a HEAVY molt in preparation for winter. That being said the girls are not producing as many eggs as before. The farm stand will be open as eggs are available 🫶🏼

Homestead Update 🐔🦆🐝
A couple of days ago, we added more hens to our flock, and today’s first day of free ranging went great — all the babies returned home safely!

Next, I’m going to trial letting the ducks free range too. With a larger chicken flock now, I’m hoping they’ll be encouraged to linger closer to home. There’s also less foraging available in the fall, so they’ll likely be more inclined to come back — plus, they already have an established laying spot, so hopefully habit keeps them returning to nest. So far, their door has been open for 15 minutes and no one’s wandered off yet!

On the bee side of things, I’ll be winterizing my one surviving hive today. I’m adding sugar cubes on the upper box, a burlap sack for moisture control, and a 2-inch layer of foam insulation before placing the outer cover back on. I’m also considering moving the hive into my unused greenhouse to help buffer it from the wind and cold while keeping an eye on ventilation.

🥚 The Stand is Open! 🐔🦆
We’ve got three dozen chicken eggs and a little over a dozen duck eggs available today!

Duck eggs handle just like chicken eggs, but you might notice they sometimes look a little less pristine. That’s simply because ducks are water-loving birds who spend more time in damp areas, so their eggs can pick up a bit more natural residue.

💡 Fun fact: Duck eggs are fantastic for baking — they make cakes, breads, and pastries extra rich and fluffy!

We closed up the coop last night unsuspecting a little visitor who checked into the coop motel for a little bed and breakfast-.- All the hens are well, but the eggs are long gone.

🥺My last hive check was on August 9th, right before we left for a family vacation. When I came back and inspected them yesterday, this is what I found…

Both my pink hive and blue hive had been full of capped honey, but now it’s completely gone. Every bit of honey has disappeared. I don’t see any evidence of wax moths or hive beetles, though I haven’t had the chance to do a mite check yet.

In just two weeks, all their stores have been wiped out. The majority of my pink hive is dead or dying, and at this point I sincerely doubt the queen has survived — I can’t find any signs of her presence. If there are any fellow beekeepers in our area I could really use some guidance 🥺

Hi yall! We have a lot to take care of on the homestead since we have been away. Our stand will be closed this week while we will be busy between working fulltime, parenting full time, and catching up on our homesteading full time. We will re-open Aug 23rd ♥️ Thank you!
