An older deck doesn’t always have to come completely down.

We run into this quite a bit. The deck boards are worn, the railings are dated and the whole deck looks like it’s ready to be replaced.

But once you get underneath and take a closer look, the framing may still be in good shape.

That’s where deck resurfacing can make sense.

At Lorenzi Deck Company, we’ll look at the framing, posts, footings, joists and the overall condition of the existing deck before recommending what to do. If everything underneath is still solid, we may be able to replace the decking, railings and stairs instead of tearing the entire deck down.

Of course, not every deck is a good candidate for resurfacing. If there are structural problems, code issues or you’re ready for a completely different layout, rebuilding may be the better option.

One thing we’ve learned at Lorenzi Deck Company is that where you put the stairs matters more than you might think.

We’ve been out to plenty of homes where the homeowner had one spot in mind for the stairs, but after looking at the yard together, another location just made more sense.

Sometimes the stairs would take up too much room on the deck.

Other times they’d come down in a spot that nobody would really want to use. Moving them over a few feet or to another side of the deck can change the whole layout.
