At Lorenzi Deck Company, a lot of homeowners already have a pretty good idea of what color decking they want before we ever meet with them.

The railing? That usually takes a little more thought.
It can be surprising how different a deck looks once the railing goes up. Black aluminum is a popular choice right now, especially if you want something clean that doesn’t take too much attention away from the rest of the deck or the backyard.

But what looks good on one house isn’t necessarily going to look right on another. We look at the home, the height of the deck, the stairs and the surrounding yard before figuring out what makes the most sense.

An older deck doesn’t always have to come completely down.

We run into this quite a bit. The deck boards are worn, the railings are dated and the whole deck looks like it’s ready to be replaced.

But once you get underneath and take a closer look, the framing may still be in good shape.

That’s where deck resurfacing can make sense.

At Lorenzi Deck Company, we’ll look at the framing, posts, footings, joists and the overall condition of the existing deck before recommending what to do. If everything underneath is still solid, we may be able to replace the decking, railings and stairs instead of tearing the entire deck down.

Of course, not every deck is a good candidate for resurfacing. If there are structural problems, code issues or you’re ready for a completely different layout, rebuilding may be the better option.

One thing we’ve learned at Lorenzi Deck Company is that where you put the stairs matters more than you might think.

We’ve been out to plenty of homes where the homeowner had one spot in mind for the stairs, but after looking at the yard together, another location just made more sense.

Sometimes the stairs would take up too much room on the deck.

Other times they’d come down in a spot that nobody would really want to use. Moving them over a few feet or to another side of the deck can change the whole layout.

When we look at a new project, we walk the property and talk about how you plan to use the deck. We’ll look at things like where you normally walk through the yard, whether there’s a patio below and what part of the backyard you use the most.
