Atlantic Beach follows a sleek, modern language of modern levels and half-levels that spill over one another in a series of private patios, each with a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Clad in thermally-modified radiata pine, the materials and textures themselves overlap in various tones and applications: kebony wood rainscreen, weathered wood siding, concrete, bluestone, and glass bring depth and variety to the minimalist architecture.

Honoring a Legacy of Modernism in the Hamptons

I had the privilege of attending the retrospective hosted by Chris LaGuardia — a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy Jaffe left on Hamptons architecture.

Over the years, I’ve had the honor of renovating three Norman Jaffe homes, each project deepening my appreciation for his bold vision and the importance of preserving modernist design in our coastal landscape.

Our work at Martin Architects and 4MA Builders is not just about building forward—but also about protecting the past.

Stay tuned for more from this important retrospective and our continued commitment to architectural heritage. Thank you for an amazing event!

✈️ Just back from AIA25 in Boston!

Nick Martin, founder of Martin Architects, returned inspired and energized from the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design® 2025, held June 4–7 in Boston. A standout moment? Hearing from his former Pratt professor, Deborah Berke, whose legacy continues to shape the field. Congratulations to Ms. Berke on receiving the AIA’s highest honor—the Gold Medal—a well-deserved recognition of her visionary leadership and influence.

Other inspiring voices included Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, who sat down with AIA’s 2025 President Evelyn Lee, FAIA, NOMA, to discuss the future of infrastructure, sustainability, and the architect’s evolving role in shaping resilient communities. It was riveting.

Everyone at Martin Architects was honored when we took home two prestigious honors at the AIA Long Island 60th ARCHI Awards in the Residential Single Family category ($1–3M) for our projects, Montauk Surfside and Azurest Legacy.

These awards reflect our studio’s commitment to bold, thoughtful design—and the extraordinary craftsmanship of 4MA Builders, who brought these homes to life with unmatched precision and care. www.martinarchitects.com | www.4mabuilders.com

Thank you to the AIA for the recognition and the continued opportunity to push boundaries in architecture and design. Can't wait for next year!

Georgica Estate Wins AIA Long Island ARCHI Award | www.martinarchitects.com | www.4mabuilders.com

Martin Architects is proud to announce that its Georgica Estate residence has received the Outstanding Design Excellence Award at the Annual AIA Long Island ARCHI Awards.
Located in East Hampton’s historic Georgica area, the net-zero energy home blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. A sculpted terrain, central courtyard, and defined zones for privacy and gathering create a dynamic and site-specific design.

Built with sustainable materials—wood, stucco, and metal—the home is both durable and environmentally responsible. Passive and active strategies, including super-insulation, solar panels, and geothermal systems, ensure high performance with minimal impact.
“It’s a home that breathes with nature—not just in form, but in purpose,” says Nick Martin, founder of Martin Architects.

This award honors the firm’s commitment to sustainable, place-based design

Tucked away in the core of Amagansett lies a house crafted by Charles Gwathmey. Situated just a brief walk from the ocean, this dwelling is adjacent to the iconic structure he created for his parents. This project aims to safeguard Gwathmey's vision while infusing it with a fresh, modern dynamism. Adhering to Gwathmey's choice of materials, we have used finishes that define his aesthetic, such as the juxtaposition of cedar, stone, glass, and steel, while extending it to incorporate newer materials unavailable during the original design.

We've added elements like channel glass, rain screening, and concrete flooring to elevate and embody the home's character. Through meticulous detailing, we minimize awkward junctions and emphasize the beauty of the house's mid-century proportions and design. We focused on preserving the original grid that Gwathmey used, allowing us to incorporate an indoor-outdoor spa equipped with a translucent infrared sauna and a cryogenic plunge pool, all wrapped in Gwathmey's signature Dal square tile.

To strengthen the link from the outdoor pool to the tennis court beyond, a central breezeway was introduced. Additional openings for doors and windows in the primary structure were created and then elegantly clad in a rainscreen. Throughout the residence, interiors are crafted with wood and tile consistent with the original style, but with an emphasis on both passive and active sustainable practices. The end result is a tribute to Gwathmey’s brilliance. The choice of materials and the scope of work endeavor to spotlight his meticulous attention to detail and the comfort of residential architecture.

Shinnecock Bay Residence: A Sacred Restoration
www.martinarchitects.com

In another meaningful project, Martin Architects led the restoration and unification of two bayfront homes into a single family compound on the shores of Shinnecock Bay — ancestral land of the Shinnecock Nation. Guided by reverence for the site's cultural and ecological heritage, the design preserves the original footprints while reimagining the homes as minimalist, modern sanctuaries.

Native and drought-tolerant landscaping — designed in partnership with DeMauro and DeMauro—helps reestablish the natural ecosystem, reinforcing the project's mission of sustainability and respect for place.

Designing and building in the Hamptons means working with one of nature’s greatest canvases. 🌿🏡 www.martinarchitects.com

At Martin Architects, we approach every project with deep respect for the environment—letting the natural surroundings guide the architecture rather than compete with it.

Modern design is at its best when it complements its setting. That’s why we prioritize sustainability, natural materials, and seamless indoor-outdoor connections that celebrate this extraordinary place's light, landscape, and rhythm.

Every structure we create is rooted in context — thoughtful, timeless, and inspired by nature.
