BMA Architects Blaze Makoid has been practicing architecture and design since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1985.

Prior to establishing his own firm, he has worked for the internationally known design firms of Kallmann, McKinnell & Wood and the Hillier Group where he was the design director for their Philadelphia Office. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Architecture Magazine, Hamptons Cottages and Gardens and the Robb Report. His designs have been exhibited in New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia. He has received numerous national and international design awards including The 2008 Long Island AIA Commendation for Outstanding Achievement in Residential Design, The Boston Society of Architects’ First Citation and the Philadelphia AIA Honor Award for Excellence.

Inspired by a sculpture within the landscape, Jule Pond II expresses two distinct identities. At the entrance, a dark brise soleil spans two stories and presents a unified façade, visually connecting the three wings of the sprawling house, which were intentionally arranged to reduce the scale.

Mecox Bay | A restrained material palette carries from exterior to interior, where warm woods are juxtaposed against dark stone, blackened metal, and softly textured surfaces. Drawing on principles of Japanese design, spaces are composed around framed views, carefully considered thresholds, and moments of intimacy within the larger open plan.

A built-in dining nook, for example, becomes an architectural frame for the garden, while the primary bath opens directly toward the water, making the landscape an integral part of the room.

Mecox Bay | Set along Mecox Bay in Southampton, this residence is shaped by a close relationship between architecture, interiors, and landscape.

Our team worked in collaboration with Monica Fried Design to create a home defined by strong horizontal proportions, natural materials, and a quiet connection to its waterfront setting.


The architecture is composed as a series of broad, low-slung planes wrapped in wood. Deep overhangs reinforce the horizontal character of the house while sheltering terraces carved beneath the upper volume. At the ground floor, expansive glazing opens the primary living spaces to the gardens, pool, and bay; above, a continuous ribbon of windows provides privacy while maintaining long views across the landscape.
