The biggest mistake homeowners make with exotic woods?
Using a finish that was never designed for them.

Mahogany contains natural oils and has a much denser grain than most wood species. Using the wrong product can lead to poor pe*******on, premature failure, peeling, and difficult maintenance.

For this beautiful mahogany porch, we chose Sansin SDF in Golden Gate because it’s specifically engineered for exotic hardwoods. Instead of forming a thick film on the surface, it penetrates deep into the wood fibers, allowing the wood to breathe while protecting it from UV damage and moisture.

The biggest advantage? Future maintenance.

When it’s time for a maintenance coat, a quick wash and fresh coat that applies like butter, not stripping away layers of peeling finish and starting from scratch. That’s a huge difference in both cost and labor over the life of the porch.

🚨 If your cedar siding is turning black, STOP blaming the shade.

Black mildew on cedar isn’t just caused by a lack of sunlight. In fact, some of the worst mildew growth can happen on areas that get plenty of sun.

On this beautiful cedar shingle home in Chappaqua, the siding was prefinished years ago with an oil-based stain. Over time, oils within the coating can become a food source for mildew, especially as the finish begins to break down.

The bigger issue? This siding hadn’t been maintained in approximately 15 years.

After years of UV exposure, rain, snow, and changing seasons, the protective stain had significantly deteriorated, particularly on the front elevation, which takes the brunt of the weather. Once that protective barrier breaks down, moisture is absorbed more easily, mildew has an easier place to grow, and the cedar begins to weather much more rapidly.

Our solution wasn’t to simply wash away the mildew.

Unlike traditional film-forming coatings, Sansin SDF (Sansin ) penetrates deep into the wood, helps repel water while allowing the cedar to breathe, and is far easier to maintain in the future without the extensive stripping and sanding many older systems require.

The best way to protect cedar isn’t waiting until it turns black. It’s maintaining the finish before the coating reaches this stage.
