NFPA Safety Month: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Starts at Home
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we rely on every day — from phones, laptops, cameras, and power tools to e-bikes, scooters, and other rechargeable equipment. While convenient, these batteries can pose a serious fire risk when they are damaged, improperly charged, overheated, or used with the wrong charger.
One major concern is thermal runaway, a dangerous chain reaction that can cause a battery to overheat, ignite, or spread fire quickly.
Safety Tips to Help Reduce Risk:
• Use only manufacturer-approved chargers.
• Avoid charging devices on beds, couches, or other soft surfaces.
• Do not leave larger rechargeable devices charging overnight or unattended.
• Keep batteries away from extreme heat, direct sunlight, moisture, and salt water.
• Stop using batteries that are swollen, leaking, overheating, or damaged.
• Never throw lithium-ion batteries in regular trash — use proper recycling locations.
Warning Signs Include:
• Unusual odors
• White v***r or smoke
• Swelling, popping, leaking, or hissing sounds
• A device or battery casing that feels very hot
