Great Blue Herons are prehistoric elegance in motion.

One flew over head the other evening, and I stopped what I was doing to watch it glide by. With its massive 6-foot wingspan, trailing legs, and elegantly curved neck, it looked like a living dinosaur from another era.

Long revered as a symbol of patience and perseverance, herons are also seen in many cultures as messengers who can pass between earth and sky realms. Perhaps that’s why they feel so otherworldly.

“In Tranquil Waters” is an invitation to practice stillness. It reminds us that we’re connected to something far larger than ourselves, and that there’s more to life than what we can experience with our five senses. It symbolizes peace, intuition, and courage.

May it inspire you to move through life’s challenges with grace and wisdom.

Wolves have always held a special place in my heart.

My maternal grandfather was of Slavic descent. When his parents immigrated to the US, his generation was the first in that family to be born on American soil.

I never met him as a child, so he became almost mythic in my imagination. He was a distant but loyal figure: brave, kind, and somehow ethereal. Real, yet just out of reach.

In Slavic folklore, there’s a legendary Silver Wolf, a mystical guardian that walks the border between the physical world and the spirit realm. Unlike in American folklore, where wolves often symbolize danger or evil, the Slavic Silver Wolf symbolizes loyalty, bravery, and protection, crossing between worlds to aid those in need.

This painting, Silver and Gold, is my tribute to that legend and to my grandfather. The Silver Wolf represents the convergence of the natural and spiritual worlds, reminding us that we are watched over and protected, even when we can’t see it.

The gold in the piece honors the priceless value of relationships, especially the ones that shape us from afar.

I was finally able to meet my grandpa in person just a couple of years before he passed. And he was exactly as I had imagined him: brave, kind, and warmhearted.

Some legends turn out to be true. 🐺✨

“Backcountry Mosaic” at the .m.russell.

Every summer when I was growing up, my family left polite civilization behind and ventured deep into wilderness areas for weeks at a time, hiking with only a compass and a map. My dad had a “No Trails” rule. Once we were away from the trailhead, we bushwhacked instead of following beaten paths.

These “vacations” formed things in me that I am intensely grateful for today: patience, endurance, and the ability to persevere, even when miserably uncomfortable. And it gave me breathtaking glimpses of wildlife in their element.

Painting this piece allowed me to revisit those encounters.
We all have moments when we brush up against something larger than ourselves.

Backcountry Mosaic is pieced together from memories like this one. We are all made up of a mosaic of experiences our lives have afforded us, and the challenge we face as artists is how to share those moments in visual form.

My hope is that this painting brings to mind some of your own wild memories and inspires you to explore again.

Patience shows us how to observe, trust, and believe that what we need will come in time.
There’s a beauty and dignity in waiting. It is the opposite of scarcity.
Patience teaches us to hold out for the best rather than settle for what seems good enough.

Sometimes we need time to just be.

To take time to retreat into the hidden spaces of our hearts. This is where we slow down, purposefully shut out all distractions, and inquire of ourselves.

What actually matters to me right now?
What is the most important thing (or person) I need to attend to?

This is where I encounter the quiet beauty of my life, often hidden in plain sight.

I cherish these tranquil moments, even though I must schedule them to make them happen.
How do you find your "just be" time?

If you’re new here, its a pleasure to meet you. Let me share a bit of my story.

I’ve been painting since 2002, and working as a full-time artist since 2012.

My Dreamscape series invites viewers to enter a world of wonder, while my Modern Wild series features wildlife subjects rendered in a contemporary realist style set with abstract backgrounds. My work is subtly multifaceted, always backed by story.

I am also a published author. My debut novel, “Going To Extremes,” is the true story of how, when the world was shutting down in 2020, my husband and I chose to literally follow a series of dreams I had to one of the most rugged places on earth: Alaska.

If you love real-life adventure, spiritual growth, and stories of courage, my book invites you to listen for God’s voice and follow where He leads…no matter how far it takes you.

Encouraging others is one of my greatest joys, and I do that through speaking. I’ve had the honor of sharing with small groups, virtual audiences, and larger gatherings at conferences and retreats. My message centers on facing fear, opening your heart to possibility, discovering purpose, and living with intention.
