Most of the trees we take down looked perfectly fine from the driveway.
Full leaves. Good color. Nothing obviously wrong with it.
The problem was under the grass — roots cut years ago when somebody trenched for a sprinkler line or poured a patio, soil compacted by equipment, or a root plate that quietly rotted out while the top of the tree kept doing its job.
A tree can hold a full canopy on a root system that's already given up. It looks like it's thriving right up until the day it goes over sideways with every leaf still green on it.
That's why "it looks healthy" isn't a plan.
