The US Department of Energy (DOE) has published its 2016 SSL R&D Plan covering both LED and OLED technologies. The plan charts a research course that could accelerate the energy savings attributable to the transition to SSL sources for lighting. The 2016 document calls for more research into emitter materials and narrowband down-converters or phosphors.

The US Department of Energy has charted an SSL technology course intended to deliver in excess of 200 lm/W at the luminaire or lighting-system level by 2025.

Pretty strong declaration from Navigant Research, hearalding "The End of the Light Bulb" with the emergence of LED tech.

“The lighting industry is headed down a path of market transformation,” Navigant Research said, “with new technology developments and innovative applications expected to displace the traditional light bulb,” thanks to the LED, which Navigant describes as “the force majeure in today’s lighting industry, offering significant energy savings, controllability, and lifespan benefits that are already creating market disruption.”
