Summer is officially here.

The solstice means longer days, more sun, and landscapes that are entering their most demanding stretch of the year. For most commercial properties, this is when irrigation management, turf care, and plant health need the most attention.

It also happens to be the point in the season when small maintenance gaps become visible ones. If something has been slightly off since spring, June is usually when it starts showing.

Now is a good time to walk your property with fresh eyes — or ask your landscape team what they're seeing.

It's National Pollinator Week — and for commercial properties, this one is more relevant than most people realize.

Pollinators don't just make landscapes look better. They're part of what makes the whole system work. When the right plants are selected for a property, they attract native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects that support plant health across the entire site.

More properties are incorporating intentional pollinator areas now — and it's one of the landscape improvements that tends to get noticed and appreciated by residents. Low maintenance, genuinely impactful, and the kind of upgrade that looks better every year. 🐝

Mid-season turf check. Here's what to act on now vs. what can wait.

Fix now:
🟢 Bare spots in high-traffic areas — seed or sod before summer heat peaks
🟢 Compaction around entrances and common areas — aeration helps recovery
🟢 Thin turf near pool areas and playgrounds — getting worse every week

Wait until fall:
🍂 Large-scale overseeding — fall is the sweet spot for cool-season turf
🍂 Full renovation of struggling areas — better establishment in cooler temps
🍂 Grading corrections — less disruption when growth slows down

Knowing the difference saves time, money, and a lot of frustration.

Most people don't think about trees until something goes wrong.

Our arborists are the ones making sure it doesn't. Risk assessments. Root and soil analysis. Structural pruning. Emergency response at 2 AM after a storm. Advanced aerial work in tight spaces most crews won't touch.

Today we're celebrating the people who keep trees — and the properties beneath them — safe. Happy Arborist Appreciation Day to our tree team. 🌳

When it comes to repairing patchy or damaged turf, one of the most common questions we get is: Should we use sod or hydroseed?

The answer depends on the situation.

Sod offers an instant finished look and is ideal when immediate curb appeal matters.

Hydroseeding is often more cost-effective for larger areas and works well when there’s flexibility on grow-in time.

Both can be great solutions, but the right choice depends on your timeline, budget, and site conditions. Understanding the pros and limitations of each helps ensure the repair actually lasts, not just looks good for a few weeks.

Summer is peak season for more than just heat. It's time to be on the lookout for signs of summer pests at your property.

By the time damage is visible — stippled leaves, declining turf, sticky residue on sidewalks — the issue has usually been building for weeks. Summer heat accelerates all of it.

A few things worth watching right now:
🐛 Grub activity showing up as soft, spongy turf patches
🦗 Surface insects causing browning that looks like drought stress
🪲 Spotted lanternfly populations starting to build again

The fix is almost always easier when it's caught early. If something looks off on your property, it's worth a closer look before it spreads.

Water bills on large commercial properties are no joke, especially through a dry summer.

Xeriscaping gets thrown around a lot, but the actual concept is pretty simple: design the landscape around plants that thrive in your local climate without needing constant irrigation to survive. Native grasses, drought-tolerant perennials, strategic hardscaping. Less water dependency, not zero landscaping.

It's a smart long-term strategy for HOAs and community managers dealing with rising utility costs or water restrictions.

New to managing a commercial property? The landscape is one of the first things residents and tenants judge, and one of the easiest things to fall behind on if you don't know what to look for.

We put together a practical site walk guide specifically for property managers in Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland. Beds, trees, turf, irrigation, and all the details that actually matter... and what they're telling you when something's off.

A few things we're seeing shape commercial landscaping in 2026:

• Native and adaptive plantings are replacing traditional turf in common areas - less water use, less maintenance, and they actually hold up better seasonally
• Pollinator gardens are showing up in HOA and multifamily properties as a legitimate amenity, not just a sustainability checkbox
• Smart irrigation controllers that adjust in real time based on weather data are becoming standard, not optional
• Outdoor amenity spaces are being designed with year-round usability in mind, fire features, shade structures, and lighting layered into the landscape plan from the start

The properties investing in these now are going to look significantly better, and spend less on maintenance three years from now.
